OAU Students' groups blame university authorities over death of colleague.

Image
Peter Oyebanji Students' groups in Obafemi Awolowo University have blamed the death of Abiodun Babatola, a 200-level student of the department of Management and Accounting, on the the school management. Recall that Abiodun Babatola was attacked by armed robbers in the wee hours of Saturday, 22nd of December in his girlfriend's hostel. Eye witnesses had it that Abiodun could have survived if not for the negligent attitudes of the university's health centre and teaching hospital. However, in the reports released by the Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University (ACJ, OAU)  and the Students' Union Action Committee, both blamed the management for the death of Abiodun Babatola. The action commitee blamed the management as a result of the accommodation policy and the insensitivity to security. The accommodation policy  adopted by the school management towards the end of last session has been a subject of constant criticism by students, especia

Hey boy, how are you doing? I really apologise for taking this long to write you. It has been twelve years since you heard from me and I have to say,it has been a crazy ride so far but as I promised while I was leaving, I'll give you everything in details. Life is a whole different experience here and I have to prepare your mind for what it is to be grown. There are no taps on the back from mother in the morning to get you ready for the day, neither is there a plea from mother for you to eat. You have to do these things yourself without any supervision.      Schooling is far from the usual. There are no school bells to tell you it is time to eat neither are there bells to tell you it is time to go home, you have to figure it out on your own. Assignments are not quantitative and verbal reasoning. Assignments are mostly done with a computer (it is a machine used to process data and has a screen like a television and has keypads like the one on father's phone, only differ

ASUU strike continues as fifth meeting with govt ends in deadlock

Image
Another meeting between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ended on Monday night without an immediate resolution of the dispute. The meeting which held at the Federal Ministry of Labour was to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the university lecturers. At least four other meetings have been held between both parties before Monday’s since the strike commenced on November 4. While addressing journalists, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, said the meeting has been adjourned to December 17. Mr Ngige said the federal government is taking all necessary steps to address ASUU’s demands. ”Cosidering the implementation of memorandum of action which we agreed to in 2017. Some of the areas have been well complied with but some have not been dealt with,” he said. Speaking on the issue of short fall in salaries of some federal universities’ lecturers, Mr Ngige said ASUU had given a list to the accountant genera

Senator Murray Bruce's common sense; and why qualitative education must be made common By Gbenga Oloniniran

Image
The 'general' view of certain phenomena abstracted as common sense is a product of human experience borne out of social evolution. Such senses will continue to be common and rational in so far they fulfill the requirement of the period. On the other hand, they cease to make sense once they no longer conform with the evolving realities. Before a perspective can be declared a common sense, it must have been tested and proven correct not by just an individual or ruling sect in the system, it must be widely accepted by the people. The Nigerian Senator from Bayelsa, in defense of federal government's position of underfunding, stated that privatization of state owned and Federal institutions of the country is the solution to incessant strikes and underfunding of education in general. He proceeded with somewhat criminal analysis that privatization method is capable of attracting investors and improving quality of education, and at the same time, that the fund meant for edu

A letter to my other half by Akin-David.

Image
The lies we tell to our own selves; It hurts the most. The truths we dare to tell us, They liberate. With a strong will of hope, and a feeling very close to desperation, I pick up my pen and tell this to my other half. The other half of me who is yet to come. The one who still waits to receive the final baton of my life and take the anchor. He’s the other half of me in ten, twenty or maybe two years. The future. The half of me I strongly hope in to succeed this present phase. I’m not the only one who should be writing this letter. Even you, dear reader, have yours to write. It’s a letter of reflection. Of accountability and hope in the future. It is relative in a way too. For some, their other half lies in years to come, and for others, decades might be the case. Without regards to the variation in the definitions of our future halves, I present to you my own letter. Dear Akin-David of the future, Good day man. What’s good? It’s me Akin of the present. I don’t ge

"The desperate opposition party view  it as a good opportunity to leverage on so as to increase their scorecard against the 2019 imminent election whilst the incumbent still reels out their usual lines of rhetorical statement." Some weeks ago, a major proportion of our dear country's defense hub was fatally crush by counter insurgents. A handful number of the Nigerian young soldiers were reported to have been sent to their unwanted early grave. The mainstream media led the trail of breaking the unforeseeable tragic news to the populace. Some of the reports reads that over  hundreds of the military men lost their lives although the military, in their usual manner refuted the claim of the media houses without  a substantial internal estimates. The timeline of the report by the Nigerian military is something left to be questioned, it more or less a brazen thing that an external body should have a more accurate and timely information about our military me

Sex-for-marks: Court denies ex-OAU professor bail

Image
A Federal High Court in Osogbo on Tuesday refused to grant bail to a former Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) lecturer, Richard Akindele charged with demanding sex to pass a student, Monica Osagie. The judge, Maureen Onyetenu, in her ruling ordered Mr Akindele to be remanded in Ilesa prison custody until December 17. Mrs Onyetenu ordered the prosecution counsel from the ICPC to produce video evidence of the lecturer and his student ”having fun”. Earlier, ICPC Senior Legal Officer, Kehinde Adetoye had prayed the court to deny the defendant bail on grounds that he will not appear for his trial when released. Mr Adetoye argued that the defendant had refused to appear in their office in Abuja after a written agreement to honour any invitation extended to him particularly since his return from abroad after a medical trip. Defence counsel, Francis Omotosho, prayed the court to grant his client bail pending the final determination of the case. The lecturer was first arraigned

Opinion: Immunity Clause under the Nigerian Constitution: Matters Arising by Binzak Azeez

Image
The doctrine of sovereign immunity is of immemorial antiquity. The exact origin of the concept has been a nebulous long-term debate. Nevertheless, it is a prominent purview among the legal historians that sovereign immunity stemmed from the English common law system. This anachronous principle is established on rex non potest peccare maxim (the king can do no king). The body solely responsible for law-making and adjudication was the king or his representatives. The king was the most superior being and therefore exempted from legal proceedings, obligations and liability which might occur while discharging some onuses singlehandedly or by proxy. Nigeria is a creation of the 1914 Constitution fashioned out by Lord Frederick Lugard, a British imperialist. Prior to the colonial arrangement of the fragmented territories that sum up Nigeria, each territory had its distinct unwritten constitution. English Law (common law) was incorporated into the Nigeria's political sphere alongsid
