OPINION: 'Expose them now, before they explode the university' by Afolabi Samuel

Image
The menace of cultism in Nigerian tertiary institutions calls for diligent analysis and pragmatic remedy.

Few weeks ago, the Obafemi Awolowo University Administration handed over 12 suspected cult members (students and ex students that have refused to graduate) to Osun State CID, Osogbo.

While it is a commendable development, it is equally crystal clear that the University is only interested in cheap populism, cosmetic face-saving drama, as the concerned individuals have been released without any further investigation or prosecution.

Obviously, the scenario is dangerous to the University Community and the Country at large.

For the sake of records, this scenario is reccurring and the scenes playing out like the 1999 brutal attack that claimed the lives of five Obafemi Awolowo University students. For students of history, the events preceeding the July 10, 1999 massacre is grossly similar to the current events.

The University Administration has forgotten, that he who fails to learn fro…

Nigerian Universities' Technologists Demand the Prosecution of Professor Akindele.

Image
The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has urged the federal government to expedite action towards the prosecution of Professor Richard Akindele, the OAU lecturer who was recently sacked over sex for marks scandal.

The unions are under the aegis of Joint Action Committee (JAC) Unions of NAAT – the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Univerisities (SSANU). According to the union, this will serve as deterrent to others, even as it urged other universities and indeed all institutions of learning to follow the O.A.U example, saying this will entrench sanity in the system.
The NAAT in a communiqués reached at the end of its 37th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U), Ile-Ife, said the unions which are in federal universities were running out of patience.

The communiqué was jointly signed by NAAT President, Sani Suleiman, and General Secretary, Iyoyo Hamilton.

Afeez: it has been a great experience so far on Oau campus , the social and academic life have been *top notch* , Oau deprives one from having social life due to the series of assessments , well I would judge that based on the way my department handles our syllabus but at the same time I try to make sure I balance both my academic and social life . I would say Oau taught me how to survive even in the most ridiculous situations. Amazing experience indeed

OAU lecturer’s Response to the Sex-for-marks Scandal: A Badly Concocted Plan Of Image Redemption.

Image
Alfred Olufemi.

He who comes in to equity must come with clean hands…

The sex-for-marks story rocked the media space in the month of April with a lot of progress reports following the 4 minutes 23 seconds audio recording in a phone call between one Professor Richard  Akindele and Ms Monica Osagie, a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo university. It was established in the conversation that the former demanded Five times of sex from the latter in exchange for marks.

The intervention of several organisations and their interest in the story prompted the university authorities to dismiss the erring Don after a detailed reports from an investigative committee set up to look in to the issue. The university confessed that the media coverage of the story, which has soiled the name of the school in the public domain, can not be disconnected, as a reason, from the dismissal of the Professor. Of course, CCN and some international media outfits reported the ‘sextortion’.
