In a display of academic excellence, scholars from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) participated actively in the recently concluded 14th International African Rotavirus Symposium. Their contributions, ranging from cutting-edge research presentations to insightful discussions, underscored OAU's commitment to advancing knowledge in the field of rotavirus studies.

Dr. Margaret Japhet and her Ph.D. student, Mr. Temiloluwa Omotade, received travel grants to showcase their research at the 14th International African Rotavirus Symposium. The Symposium was organized under the auspices of the African Rotavirus Network (AfrRN), and held in Abuja, Nigeria from 8th to 10th November 2023.

Mr Omotade presented a segment of his MSc thesis work, focusing on the prevalence of rotavirus among unvaccinated children, highlighting associated risk factors and seasonal distribution. He strongly advocated for childhood vaccination to diminish morbidity and mortality related to pediatric diarrhea.

Dr. Japhet spotlighted her work on a cost-effective, machine-free rotavirus nanoparticle-based diagnostic kit for visual rotavirus detection. Utilizing cotton swabs and nanobeads, this innovative kit stands as a significant advancement, especially for resource-limited regions. Notably, it's the first-ever cotton swab-based rotavirus diagnostic kit employing nanoparticles.

The presentation showcased groundbreaking research on combatting rotavirus infection's devastating impact and introducing vital diagnostic and preventive measures to reduce its prevalence and health implications, particularly in vulnerable populations.
