WAUG 2023: The Potential Impacts On OAU Campus

Edun Precious

The West African University Games (WAUG) has been slated to commence on the 15th of December 2023 and guess which institution is hosting this edition? 'Ma je ko lo far' (Don't think too much), it is Oba Awon University. The renowned Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife known as Africa's Most Beautiful Campus will play host to several participating institutions at the OAU sports complex.

WAUG, also known as ECOWAS Students' Games, is a multi-sport event among student-athletes from Universities in the African sub-region. It is always held at a 4-year interval and the last edition took place at the University of Port-Harcourt, Rivers State in November 2018. The first edition of the competition was held at the University of Ibadan back in 1965. Among the six historical host Nigerian Universities, OAU will be the first to achieve the feat of hosting a second time. Do you know? The first edition hosted by Oba Awon Uni was in 1975 and it doubled as the sixth edition in total.

It shouldn't be a shock that there would be huge impacts of such an event on the university's campus. Here, we will be dissecting potential impacts the WAUG has/will have on the OAU campus, and among them include:

Upgrade on University Facilities
Obafemi Awolowo University, set to host the 15th edition with over 200 participating universities, has made adequate preparations by renovating essentials in the sports complex. Lately, there has been an upgrade in the infrastructural amenities of the university. High-quality lighting systems have been fixed at the main bowl and its surroundings to ensure continuous sporting activity even in a nocturnal environment. Courts in the sports complex have been repainted and renovated to ensure an aesthetically pleasing environment. Some parts of the residential hostels have been renovated to provide a livable environment.

Social Diversity and Networking
WAUG is also something we can anticipate as the event is set to bring about a wide range of social and cultural diversity. This is because the school will be hosting athletes from diverse backgrounds. It is set to promote social influence and students can be able to network with visiting participants in one way or another.

Revenue Generation
Furthermore, this event will take a toll on the campus economic system by increasing the revenue of local businesses. Due to a population increase within the timeframe, local businesses especially those around sports complex and halls will record more transactional deals and in the long run, generates a running economy for the university environment.

Increase in Movement and Activities
As the event commences, increased movement of people should be expected on campus. Traffic congestion is bound to occur in some parts due to a higher concentration of population. The time expected to transit might take longer than scheduled so it is advisable to plan to curb possible delays.

Resource Allocation
Finally, there would be an impact on the allocation of available resources on campus. An illustration of this is the potential increased strain on resources like water and electricity in halls of residence since they would be shared among a larger number of people. Rest assured! The University management is putting every necessary thing in place to make the event an enjoyable and memorable one without discomfort on the part of the students.

Recall that the University's Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, stated in a press release; "It will involve sports contingents from universities in the West African sub-region and participants will compete for medals in sports such as tennis, table tennis, basketball and athletics, and many more.”

He added that the Federal Minister of Interior, Honorable Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, would be the special guest of honor during the opening and closing ceremonies of the games. He concluded by saying “The closing ceremony will come up on 22 December".

In conclusion, as students and staff of the university look forward to enjoying this great event, it is pertinent to enjoy the moment as it unfolds. Also, it is important to be cautious and take adequate steps to maximize the positive impacts and mitigate negative ones. WAUG is upon us, Sports complex will soon be home to several people from different backgrounds; you can be part of it.
