Confusion Clears as West African Universities Game 2023 Unfolds at OAU

The 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG'23) commenced at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife on Friday, 15th December, 2023, signifying the arrival of participating universities across the region.

However, today, 16th December, witnessed a moment of confusion among students as the expected kick-off did not materialize.

In a chat with OAU Kilonshele, Great Ife Students' Union Director of Sports, Sumbade Saudiq, provided clarification, stating that December 15th was reserved for the arrival of all participating universities.

In an exciting update, it has also been revealed that the Opening Ceremony will hold at the Sports Complex on Sunday, 17th, December, adding an extra layer of anticipation and festivity to the event.

He further clarified that "Today, 16th December, is scheduled for accreditation processes, paving the way for the official commencement of the games on Monday."

Sumbade also highlighted that more than 200 universities from across the West African sub-region are set to compete for medals in diverse sports such as Tennis, Table Tennis, Basketball, and Athletics. While several universities have already arrived, a full participation count is yet to be achieved.

The grand finale, scheduled for Friday, 22nd December, promises to be a remarkable event. Notably, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is slated to present at the culmination of the games.
