The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University branch on 16th May, 2019 held a press conference to tackle the incidence of abduction against one of their members,  Professor A.O. Adegbehingbe who was allegedly kidnapped by Fulani Herdsmen.

The spokesperson for ASUU OAU, Dr. Adeola Egbedokun on Thursday delivered the press conference speech. After welcoming the pressmen, he stated their reason for holding the press conference as a measure the union deemed fit in alarming the State governor, the State Security Service, the Obas in council and most importantly the university's vice chancellor of the threat against their members which is capable of lowering the morale of workers and destroying academic, teaching and research activities in the university.

"This is an unwelcome development capable of lowering the morale of workers and destroying academic, teaching and research activities."

He also acknowledged the timorous state of all the members of University community as far as security is concern. He noted that trepidation, anxiety, fear and other factors that contribute to insecurity is pervading the university community as a result of insecurity. ASUU OAU through their investigation and the alleged statement of the victim, Professor A.O. Adegbehingbe,  confirmed the perpetrators as Fulani herdsmen through the language they speak as that resembling Fulani's language. The union condemned the awful development as a barbaric act. He further announced that the Union is ready to fight even if the government, which as an institution should ensure their safety is not ready to do so.

"If ASUU will have to go into a battle, ASUU will do. Especially if government failed to stand up to their responsibility. Because it is the responsibility of the government to provide adequate security of lives and properties of the citizens."

When our correspondent asked if there is a known or suspected group of people who might have grudges against the victim, he didn't provide response to the question.

When asked about the steps the University management have taken to curb recurrent attacks on students and to stop the abduction, he stated that he believed that they should have been taking steps.

"As to your question, I want to say that it is the PRO of the University or better still the Vice Chancellor himself that can provide answers to the issue of robbery attacks on students outside campus. But I believe there should be measures they are taking already. Although, they should be able to tell us what measures they are taking," he said.

However, the last time OAU Kilonshele contacted the Cheif Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun as regards the steps they are taking to put a stop to the recent tension within the university community, he revealed that they're taking steps but they can not share them with the public.
