SHORT STORY: Moisty eyes

Adekanmbi Ademola

Mary grew up as one of the brightest girls in her class and made her the subject of envy among her peers and parents who admired what seemed to be a "divine" brain. She strolled on her subjects with ease and trampled on her exams effortlessly.

 Mrs Coy came to pick her daughter from school everyday since her husband worked outside the country which promoted the Mother-daughter bond between herself and Mary.

     Mrs Coy, an accountant in a popular firm who is known to be extremely hard-working and dedicated to her job had earned every step she took to being the General manager of the firm. She had an approachable and friendly character which enhanced her whooping victory over other General managers in the last Accounting Enthusiast Awards(AEA). Mrs Coy always ended her conversation with every aspiring accountant to "follow their passion and life will reward them bountifully..."

        "Thank God!!!" Shouted Mrs Coy as she stood up from the chair in her exotic bedroom which had been well-lavished with state of the art interior decorations combined with a king-size bed and marble floor with a calmly blowing A.C and a flat screen television and a home theartre. Her bedroom passed for a living room. Mary ran into the room to confirm where the noise came from with a look which was searching thoroughly for answers.

"Your father's proposal has been granted and he will be coming home tomorrow" she said in one breath.

Mary jumped high with the ecstasy of the 7 year-old she is and ran to give her mum a hug. She has not seen her dad in six months and his stay of a year has been cut to six months. Her joy knew no bounds. Mary enjoyed the luxury of being the only child as her father would break the bank for her satisfaction. Mother and daughter prepared thoroughly for father's appearance before going to bed after a hectic saturday.

Mr Coy did not survive the plane crash and it has been 15 years since the tragedy happened. Mrs Coy was on her way to visit her daughter who was a final year student at the University when she met her untimely death. The news reached Mary while she was preparing for her exams which ruined any motivation she had for the final papers.

      Graduation day came faster than the fingers count and she was shocked at being announced the best student in the College of Medicine. She climbed the stage for her speech and a very sad figure stood before the audience. She looked around and smiled with a sigh of optimism and lips of rejuvenation she said;

"Give it your all and never let life get the best of you and you will be amazed how your moisty eyes of sorrow will become moisty eyes of joy."

 Everyone who knew her story stood up and clapped in appreciation for her short but inspiring speech.

Mary is married with three children and just opened her own hospital.

  1. However, I still don't know why excellence always has to be portrayed by most writers as studying Medicine or being a Doctor.

    Just saying.. ....
