OAU TECH WEEK: "Technology is the new boy"

"Technology is the new boy" were the words of Akin Ogunbiyi, Chairman Mutual Benefit Assurance Plc who chairs the OAU Tech Week conference themed "Tech Impact: Harnessing The Power of Technology for Positive Change" held in the early hours of Tuesday at the institution's New Moot and Mock Court.


Ogunbiyi who lauded the Olayiwola Folahan- Reform led Great Ife Students' Union administration for innovation of the Tech empowerment programme for Obafemi Awolowo University Students.

He added that the circles of Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon all emerged technologically by solving humans' problems with their innovation equally charging the students to emulate such model.


The tech empowerment programme aims at getting 1000 Obafemi Awolowo University students well grounded and engaged in tech soft skills with secured gadgets (Laptops) to be paid for installmentally.

Tim Akano(CEO New Horizon), the guest speaker, OAU Department of International Relations alumnus (1983-1987) enjoined the incorporation of the maiden OAU Tech Week edition in its union's annual activities with his support through customized master class and mentorship for intending inventors. 

He further cited the 7 top evolving tech skills in the world market with an average income of $50, 000 - $250,000 to be prioritized by the students; Data Science, artificial intelligence, binge data, blockchain, cloud, web 3.0, and social media marketing. 

According to him, jobs are available but lack of innovative skills is a challenge. 

"There are jobs, what you lack is information and skills." Akano stated. 


The event featured panelists' session with technological experts; Femi Iromini (CEO Moni), Kayode Akomolafe (CEO Chams Mobile Ltd), Solomon Akporkpokpor (CEO Classic Systems Infotech Ltd), Iyilade Johnson (CEO Glomacs), Adegoke Adeboye (Senior Manager Paradigm initiative) and others who shared their remarkable experiences in the industry, emphasizing the need for problem-solving idea to evolve in the tech space and stressing the need for building a good quality relationship to foster a beneficial career networking system.


In highlight of the event were presentation of awards by the Students' Union President, Olayiwola Folahan to guests and the launching of the Tech magazine entitled "Techfusion: The pulse of OAU's Tech Innovators" spearheaded by Chairman of the event, Akin Ogunbiyi and the Guest Speaker, Tim Akano.
