UPDATE: OAU Management Reacts To Death of Finalist

In the late hours of Tuesday, trending news flying around confirmed the death of a finalist of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, who was alleged to have stolen a mobile phone. 


The President of the OAU Students' Union released a circular confirming the death of the student at the University Teaching Hospital Complex. 


Few hours after, the management of the institution confirmed the death of the student and dropped a release strongly condemning the actions that led to the demise of the affected individual.


According to the release by the Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, a preliminary investigation indicated that the student died as a result of a mob action due to alleged stealing and that a committee will be launched by the Vice Chancellor to investigate the matter thoroughly. 


According to the release signed by the Public Relations Officer of the institution;


"The administration of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State,

has condemned, in strong terms, the incidence that led to the death

of a part 5 student of the institution.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun

Olarewaju, stated that preliminary investigation revealed that the

student died of a mob action on the allegation that he stole a phone.

Saddened by this ugly development which he described as

unfortunate, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE,

has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to this incident.

The action of the mob, being a violation of the law of the country and of the University regulations, has been reported to the police who have commenced investigations.

The University administration hereby commiserates with the parents of the deceased, staff and students, and prays that God will grant us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

Students are strongly admonished to desist from taking laws into

their hands and to report any criminal activities to the University

authorities for immediate actions"

The release stated. 

OAU KILONSHELE wishes the university community, family and associates of the deceased the strength to bear the fortitude of this loss. May his soul rest in peace.
