Editorial: Will OAU Students Sell their Birthright for a Loaf of Bread and Àkàrà?

Just like tales of every end of an academic calendar, session and semester also a moment of running "kiti-kiti kete-kete" for the political figures, it's another phase in the political encyclopedia of the Great Ife Students' Union and moreso an era that will pave way for the decision of Great Ife Students for another session of unionism.

Interestingly, as we gravitate toward the Students' Union election the political atmosphere is gradually attaining climax. A period the students' electorate easily gets consumed by gimmicks of the incumbents even at the sight of their atrocities which played out in a press statement disbursed couple of hours ago from Office of the Students' Union Welfare Director termed "welfare package" securing 5000 loaves of bread to be accompanied with beans cake [àkàrà] for OAU students.

While there are numerous pressing edifiable programmes meant to promote students' welfare that has been absconded by the office like the poor University health care system that has caused many students to flee the ought to be saving ground. Lo! if health is indeed wealth, most perhaps Great Ife reeks penury after all.

The same office constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of general welfare of the students has been accused of assaulting fellow student at the mini Aso Rock of which the case subsequently evaporated into the atmosphere like steam.

Dada Arafat, are you rubbing this to the face of Great Ife Students with your cum "welfare package"?

Oftentimes, one wonders if students accommodated off-campus are not to be accorded welfare likewise, as they groan in exorbitant house rent charges even those struggled to afford made students vulnerable which the Office and the Union itself have failed to come to aid while the University accommodated students also struggle and can neither boast of drinkable and stable source of water.

The holy book stated, "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of God's mouth". However, the supreme being in this context should be equated to our Union leaders that have fed the students with an inedible substance that will compel them to acute hunger.

Different individuals step up to the plate in every session in Great Ife, always eager to assume office and make their mark in the world of campus politics. However, it is important to take a biting evaluation of their performances; students should be able to judge if the politicians are all they’re cracked up to be or otherwise. It is common thing to see candidates struggling to fix their reputation after an administration filled with unfulfilled promises and gross misconduct. Many have made enemies of the fourth estate because of the constant demand for accountability.
