ACJOAU Hosts ICJC 2025, Announces Winner of Adejumo Kabir Essay Competition

The Association of Campus Journalists at Obafemi Awolowo University held its 2025 International Campus Journalism Conference on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the BOOC Lecture Theatre, Ile-Ife. The event, themed "Media for Development: The Media as a Tool for Innovative Drive and Socio-Political Economic Transformation," brought together students and media professionals to discuss the role of the media in society.

The conference featured keynote speaker Femi Adesina, former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari. Adesina spoke about how the media can drive innovation and foster social and economic change. He explained that media for development means using platforms like radio and television to promote positive change in communities. He highlighted the importance of sharing information, empowering people, and holding leaders accountable. Adesina also gave examples, such as community radio and digital platforms, as tools for development. He concluded, "Media for development is a journey. We must keep the destination in mind."

Other speakers included Abimbola Abatta, an investigative reporter at the Foundation for Investigative Journalism; Anthony Dimnwka, an on-air personality at Nigeria Info 99.3 FM; Afouda Samuel, presenter and producer at 32FM 94.9; Osarennoma Saba, a presenter and producer at Dominion Broadcast Group; and Professor Ayodele, the association's adviser.

The conference included two panel sessions. The first panel session was moderated by Oladele Hannah Boluwatife from the University of Ilorin’s Campus Journalists (UCJUnilorin) and featured Abimbola Abatta as the panelist. The discussion focused mainly on the role of media in society. The second panel session was moderated by ThankGod from Olabisi Onabanjo University and featured panelists Afouda Samuel, Anthony Dimnwka, and Abimbola Abatta. This session explored "The Power of Storytelling in the Media."

During the event, winners of the third edition of the Adejumo Kabir Essay Contest were announced and received their awards. Sheriffdeen Muslim emerged as the overall winner.
