OAU Architecture Students Urged to Embrace Mentorship, Innovation

Ife Architecture Students’ Association (IFASA) at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, held its annual summit, tagged Summit 2.0, on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the Ajose Lecture Theatre. The event, themed “Beyond Build,” brought together students from all levels in the Department of Architecture, including postgraduate students, as well as lecturers and professors from the department.
The summit opened with a welcome address by Professor A.D. Ajiboye, Head of the Department of Architecture, who greeted guests and introduced members of staff present, including Professor Osasona, Professor Dolapo Amole, and Professor Ilesanmi, the Deputy Provost of the Postgraduate College, among others. Favor Oyekan, President of IFASA, also welcomed everyone and highlighted some activities that took place before the summit, such as a campus cleaning exercise in partnership with Plug in Nigeria on May 10 and a marathon race and sports fiesta on May 17.
A panel session followed, focusing on “The Future of Architecture in Nigeria: The Role of Leadership, Mentorship, and Education.” Panelist emphasized the importance of mentorship in the profession, noting that having mentors helps young architects avoid common mistakes and progress further in their careers.
Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi, President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects and the second female to hold the position, advised students to seek mentors, warning that without guidance, they might struggle to reach their full potential. She also announced scholarships for the best female and overall best students in design studio at the master’s level, and launched the Ife Architectural Journal with a donation of ₦251,000.
The keynote speech was delivered by Arc. Olusegun Ladega, who said architecture is not just about designing buildings but also about building society. He encouraged architects to embrace innovation, discipline, and commitment, stressing that these qualities are essential for the future of the profession.
The summit also featured an inter-departmental debate between Part 1 and Part 3 students, with the Part 3 team emerging victorious. Awards were presented to participants in the architectural essay competition, and Igbinlola Ebeneezer, a Part 2 student, gave a spoken word performance. Lecturers were also recognized for their outstanding contributions to the department.
The summit concluded with a vote of thanks from the IFASA president, who appreciated all attendees, speakers, and organizers for their contributions to the success of the event.
