Plogging Nigeria Organises a Campus Cleanup to Mark One Year Anniversary

In joining the rest of the planet to commemorate the World Environmental Day and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 6, Environmental Advocacy and Campaign group, Plogging Nigeria, on Saturday organised a massive campus cleanup exercise to mark her first year anniversary in Nigeria.

The Cleanup which is the second of its kind, took place at the Obafemi Awolowo University Campus with over 250 volunteers who indicated interest.

Speaking at the exercise, Chairman of the Cleanup Committee, Mr Akinola Opemipo familiarised volunteers with the primary aim of the cleanup which was in pursuance of the group's objectives and in tandem with SDGs towards ensuring fit people in clean communities across Nigeria.

Plogging is a combination of Jogging with picking up litter. It originated as an activity in Sweden around 2016 and has since gathered wide acceptance by other countries. As a workout, plogging provides variation in body movement by adding bending, squatting & stretching to the main action of running.

Founder of the group in Nigeria and Chief Plogga Mayokun Iyaomolere in his comments, seized the opportunity to appreciate the volunteers for their contributions towards making the exercise a success. He further highlighted the creation of Plogging Nigeria  Clubs in 4 other higher institutions namely Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Calabar, Calabar and Federal University of Technology, Akure as some of the achievements of the group within the last one year.

OAU Kilonshele can confirm that over 120 bags of wastes, segregated into Biodegradable and Non Biodegradable wastes were cleaned off the environment through the cleanup exercise.

Highlight of the occasion was the cutting of the anniversary cake.

Other Side attractions were, a Fitness session as well as a talk on psychological First Aid delivered by Mr Addah Tamuno Okobo, A Clinical Psychologist and Team Lead,  Mentally Aware Nigeria (MANI) Osun State.

Plogging Nigeria kicked off on the 2nd of June 2018 at the Obafemi Awolowo University, while the World Environmental Day is celebrated on July 5th every year with this year own tagged "Beat Air Pollution."
