OAU: Management speaks on suicide, mental health issues caused by ' poor' academics.

The Division of Students Affairs of Obafemi Awolowo University has reacted to the trends of suicide and mental health cases connected to poor performance in academics amongst students.

In the last three semesters, two students of have committed suicide while three have suffered mental health challenges, OAU KILONSHELE can report.

Timeline

In October 2017, during the 2016/2017 session; Mercy Afolaranmi, a 100L student of Micro Biology swallowed Sniper, a poisonous substance, because she had an 'E' in CHM101 (Chemistry for first year students).

CHM101 is a course that records a significant number of 'carryover' but had been quite higher than usual in that particular session.

In the first semester of the 2017/2018 session, 3 students suffered mental aberrations during the examinations period as a result of excess reading. One was said to have been awake for over 42 hours reading, while another was as a result of taking in a substance that deduce sleep.

Also, Kolapo Olowoporoku, an extra year student of Computer Science, recently committed suicide as a result of failing more than three courses that initially handed him an extra year.

Kolapo's course mate, who sought anonymity,  however, disclosed to OAU KILONSHELE that Kolapo was being pressured from home as a result of not meeting a specific target.

“He is not the only one that had issues with some courses. I also had but I have passed them. He wrote the course as an extra student. That was first semester last session. The result came out late because of ASUU strike but was released in the second semester. The one he told me about is CVE- technical report writing. So when it was eventually released, he failed that one again.”

“So, he said they were going to the department to beg the lecturers. Out of six of them who took the course as extra year students, only one passed. So I feel that contributed to his depression.”

When asked if the deceased ever confided in him, Mayowa replied, “He never showed it. But I could remember in part four, he told me that there’s pressure from home and that they (the parents) don’t know what he is facing in school. They want him to graduate with a first class or Second class upper.”

We are working on it- Dean of DSA

However, when the Dean of Division of Students' Affairs, Isiaka Aransi, was contacted by this correspondent, he assured that the school is working to curb the trend and that the students will get to know soon.

"We are aware of it, we've started working on it. We will discuss the matter very soon and we wil get back to students."
