OAU Students Lament Poor Healthcare Facilities Of The University Health Center

OAU KILONSHELE

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University have lamented the poor healthcare facilities of the University's health center. This is coming after patients and eyewitnesses of events that took place at the Health Center spoke with OAU Kilonshele. First, let's navigate through the reasons why the Health Center has been facing these issues.

The Nigerian University system has been plagued by poor facilities for many years. Many universities lack adequate infrastructure of all kinds. Many campuses lack electricity, running water, and proper sanitation facilities which has led to overcrowding and poor learning conditions for students which also has negatively impacted the health and wellbeing of students resulting in poor health outcomes and a higher record of death which could have been prevented.

One of the biggest problems with the healthcare facilities at OAU is the lack of staff. There are not enough doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to meet the needs of the university community. This has led to long wait times for appointments and treatments and has even resulted in people being turned away when they seek care. The health center seems to lack specialized equipment. This means that many student patients have to be transferred to other hospitals for treatment, which can be expensive and difficult.

Access to quality healthcare is a human right, yet for many students of the university, this is not a reality. The lack of infrastructure and resources means that healthcare facilities are often poorly equipped and understaffed, leaving patients with little hope of receiving adequate treatment. In some cases, this has led to preventable deaths and diseases that could have been easily treated if the proper facilities and doctors had been available.

Students are calling on the University Management to improve the Health Care Facilities of the Health Center.

In an interview with OAU Kilonshele, a patient who chose to be anonymous said "After waiting for about more than 6 hours, the nurse told us they were done for the day, we should come back tomorrow, the nurse further stated that they were short of staff and needed to rest too, that I, the patient, should go to Religious ground and will get better by my faith. Not minding how much pain I was in."

A patient named Comfort who was attended to, mentioned in her words: "The doctors assume your symptoms without proper tests and then tell you to go get some drugs outside due to shortage of drugs."

Another student, Olukunle, who had earlier been there also fault the atmosphere of the health center, said "It’s just trashy, I can’t go back there".

A student also attested that the health center of the University doesn't give extensive treatments. She further recalled her last moments in the University's Health Center, she said "I was just told to take the drugs without a thorough diagnosis. They could do better, Well, I just feel they should improve generally. They are indifferent to how the students are fairing even when in serious pain." Furthermore, she concluded that the University's Health Center workers might not be getting as much payment as they should.

Every effort to make The Welfare Director of the Students' Union, Folakan Paul speak on the measures the Students' Union is taking to make sure these facilities are present in the health center proves abortive. The Welfare Director of the Students' Union replied to OAU Kilonshele Reporter with 'Lol'.
