Students residing in OAU Hall of Residence find themselves grappling with a new challenge – a persistent blackout since Friday, just minutes before 5 pm. The blackout has left some of the halls with electricity blackout, hindering the pumping of water and subsequently restricting students from preparing for their tests.

Meanwhile, only Moremi Hall of Residence and Ladoke Akintola Hall of Residence have remained unaffected by the power outage, leaving students in other halls scrambling for alternatives. A surge of students were seen leaving their respective halls tonight and converging on Moremi Hall to access water, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Whilst the recent surge in accommodation fees, a stark increase from #3090 and #2790 to #30,000 and #25,000, respectively, has sparked outrage among the students, many students expressed their discontent, citing the combination of elevated living cost.

In response to the ongoing power outage that has affected most halls of residence (excluding Akintola and Moremi Halls), yesterday, Vice-Dean of the Division of Students Affairs, Dr L.O Olasunkanmi, issued a statement titled "Power Outage at Halls of Residence: 5th - 6th January, 2024."

Dr Olasunkanmi expressed awareness of the situation, acknowledging the power outage and extending gratitude to the Chairman of Fajuyi Hall of Residence for bringing the matter to his attention. He promptly contacted the relevant university unit and urged them to address the issue urgently.

The power cut has impacted several halls, including Fajuyi, EFT, Awo, Alumni, PG, Moz, and Angola, as well as extending to new market and some other areas on campus. Dr Olasunkanmi assured the students that the Head of the Electrical Unit has been informed and has mobilized personnels to address the situation promptly.

In his appeal, Dr Olasunkanmi requested understanding from students while the issue is being resolved and urged hall residents to remain calm. He reassured students that the university management is committed to enhancing their campus experience and emphasized that the welfare of students will never be taken for granted.
