A gas explosion is the sudden, violent release of energy from the ignition of natural gas or other flammable gases. When these substances are ignited, they can rapidly combust and produce an intense blast wave that can cause significant damage to structures and people in the immediate vicinity. The exact causes of gas explosions may vary, but factors such as improper handling of gas equipment, or lack of maintenance can all contribute to their occurrence. It is no longer news that gas explosions have become a recurring incident in school hostels. 

The question on the mind of every concerned person is, why does this keep happening? One of the major reasons for these explosions is the use of substandard gas cylinders and accessories which are not fit for purpose. Due to the cost of living and lack of awareness, some students go for cheap options which often result in deadly consequences. Other causes include:

Lack of proper safety procedures in the hostels: Many schools do not have regulations in place to ensure that gas cylinders are used and stored safely and responsibly. Coupled with this is the fact that some students, due to negligence or ignorance, leave their gas cookers on unattended while gas is leaking, causing an explosion. 

Human error: In some cases, gas explosions are the result of human error. For example, someone might accidentally turn on the wrong valve or fail to follow proper safety procedures when working with gas.

 Poor infrastructure: In general, hostel infrastructures are not well-maintained, which can contribute to gas explosions. For example, outdated electrical systems or inadequate ventilation can create the conditions for an explosion to occur.

Lack of oversight: Finally, a lack of oversight and regulation can also contribute to gas explosions in school hostels. Without sufficient oversight, universities may not be held accountable for maintaining their gas systems properly or following safety protocols.

Overall, gas explosions in school hostels are a serious problem that requires attention and action from both university officials and government regulators. By taking steps to improve maintenance, training, and oversight, we can help prevent these tragic incidents from occurring in the future.



             Effects of Incessant Gas Explosions in School Hostels

In recent years, school hostels have experienced a high incidence of gas explosions. These explosions have had a significant impact on students as a whole, in various ways.

Firstly, the explosions have resulted in injuries and fatalities. Students have been seriously burnt and even lost their lives in some cases. This has caused a lot of fear and anxiety among the student population, as they feel vulnerable and unsafe.

Secondly, the explosions have disrupted academic activities. Students have had to miss classes, tests, and exams due to the destruction of academic facilities. This has caused delays in academic progress and has also affected the quality of education that students receive.

Thirdly, the explosions have harmed the mental health of students. The trauma of witnessing an explosion or losing a friend or classmate can be very distressing. Students may experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result.

 One way to prevent incessant gas explosions in school hostels is to ensure regular maintenance and inspection of gas pipelines and equipment. This includes checking for leaks and replacing old or faulty equipment. It is also crucial to train staff and students on safe handling and use of gas equipment. 

Additionally, there should be strict regulations regarding the installation and use of gas equipment, with regular inspections and enforcement of these regulations. Finally, it is important to have emergency response plans and drills in place to minimize the damage and casualties in the event of a gas explosion.

OAU RELEASES FINAL LIST FOR 2017/2018 ADMISSIONS.

Friday, 12th January, 2018. By Olufemi Alfred .O.     In lieu of a recent publication by OAU KILONSHELE about the release of admissions list despite the strike, it has been gathered that Obafemi Awolowo University has submitted the final lists of admitted candidates to the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) on the 10th of January.     However, JAMB has began the uploading of the names on the Caps  section of the website as about 20 students have been confirmed by OAU KILONSHELE  to have been admitted      All candidates (Direct Entry and JAMB applicants)  , awaiting their names should log on to the JAMB website and check if they have been admitted.

OAU ADMISSIONS MERIT LIST UPLOADED ON JAMB WEBSITE.

      Few days ago, OAU KILONSHELE posted the release of Obafemi Awolowo University merit list for 2017/2018 admissions, it has been confirmed that some of the aspirants have seen their names on  JAMB's website.       Admission status can be viewed on the CAPS section of the website.           Below are the step by step procedures to access JAMB CAPS 1. Visit jamb.org.ng/efacility  preferably using a PC or chrome browser on mobile. 2. Login with the credentials( email and password) you created your jamb account with. 3. After successfully logging in, click on the options button ( the button with 3 dash) at the top of the page. 4. You'll see CAPS under the tag 'Admissions'. Click on it and you'll be taken to the CAPS page. 5. If the page only shows 'welcome', do not be discouraged. Just click on options on your mobile's browser and change the view of the page to 'desktop view'. This is why it's preferable to use a PC. 6.
