ALLIANCE OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS AGAINST NEOLIBERAL ATTACKS (ANSA)

OAU BRANCH

PRESS STATEMENT ON THE PLATEAU KILLINGS
27/06/18

THE $1BN SINGLEHANDEDLY EARMARKED FOR FIGHTING TERRORISM MUST BE REFUNDED.

TERRORISM MUST NOT BE TOLERATED; BRING THE PERPETRATORS TO FACE THE WRATH OF THE LAW.

DECLARE A STATE OF EMERGENCY IN THE NORTH

THE UNIVERSAL GRAZING BILL MUST BE REJECTED BY THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The Alliance of Nigerian students against neoliberal attacks ANSA uses this medium to express our utmost displeasure on the gruesome mass killing in Plateau which claimed hundreds of lives of innocent Nigerians. We outrightly condemn this reign of barbarism and terror in the Northern part of Nigeria that has resulted in various insurgence,  bombings herdsmen killings and kidnaps.

For us in ANSA, we cannot disconnect these attacks from the anti-people neoliberal siege obtainable in the Nigerian government that has neglected the security of lives of people for political interests.  The failure of the Nigerian government to fund education and development most especially in the Northern parts as well as the Country at large has exposed jobless, uneducated and poor Nigerians to terrorism. Also,  the presence of socio-economic and political marginalization of the Northerners has clearly rendered the region to barbarism. This level of marginalization of Nigerians that has taken over the federation is gradually spelling doom on the mass of people in all geopolitical zones of the country, where the laboring people and children of the poor are living   in penury as a result of the greed of the ruling class.

We condemn also the indifference of the Nigerian government and security forces to the rejuvenation and spread of the outdated cattle rearing method of nomadic grazing for this has represented  the vehicle of fast growing terrorism in the Northern and Middle-belt regions wreaking mass killings and humanitarian crises in its wake. The National Assembly must scrap all proposals for the legalization of nomadic herding and ensure that cattle ranches are set up for cattle readers with maximum security scrutiny while bringing the sponsors of the Fulani herdsmen-killers to justice.

We call for a mass-based national campaign for the declaration of a new state of emergency in the security of the Northern region. President Muhammadu Buhari, the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the country must take proactive positions on the security of Nigerians.

Lastly, we maintain that only educational and economic development of the mass of people can put end to the reign of terrorism in the country. Thus,  we call for the adequate funding of education by at least 26% budgetary allocation to encompass the education of the Northerners and Nigerians as a whole. We call on Nigerian Labour Congress NLC, Trade Union Congress TUC and civil society organizations to declare a day of mass action to reject this menace of insecurity and demand justice for the innocent bereaved.

Oloniniran Gbenga Von, Secretary.
