The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Simeon Bamire, Friday, 1st December, led a delegation of university officials to the Central Mosque of Unity on the university campus for a special thanksgiving ceremony.
During the thanksgiving sermon delivered by the Deputy Imam, Professor Makinde, expressions of gratitude were extended to Professor Bamire for the recent appointment of a new lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies, specializing in Islamic Religious Studies. Professor Makinde seized the opportunity to call on the Vice Chancellor to further strengthen the department by recruiting more lecturers with expertise in Islamic Religious Studies.
While pleading with the school management, Professor Makinde advocated for the introduction of the study of Arabic Language as a standalone department within the university. He highlighted the linguistic and cultural significance of Arabic, noting its prevalence in Africa and particularly among certain tribes in Borno state, Nigeria. The Deputy Imam stressed the importance of providing students with a comprehensive understanding of Arabic, not only as a language but as a key cultural and historical element.
Furthermore, Professor Makinde urged the University Management to uphold fairness in all their activities, emphasizing the need for equitable treatment within the institution.
Responding to these requests and expressions of gratitude, Vice Chancellor Professor Simeone Bamire addressed the Muslim community after the Jumu'ah service. He acknowledged the significance of the concerns raised by Professor Makinde and assured the community that the university was actively seeking to appoint more lecturers across all departments. Professor Bamire encouraged the Muslim community to formalize their proposal for the introduction of the Arabic Language as a department, expressing the administration's willingness to consider and evaluate such proposals.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of academic diversity and inclusivity in line with the university's commitment to providing a well-rounded education. The event concluded with prayers for continued unity, progress, and academic excellence within the OAU community
