The Committee on School Fees Review established at the congress of September 18th stated that its members had exhausted all peaceful means of dialogue and negotiation, and would not engage in any further negotiations with the management of the University.

The Committee made this statement in a press statement issued early this morning, in which it also invited the Alumni body of the University to collaborate with the Students' Union in its effort to maintain the policy of Free Education that was established by late chief Obafemi Awolowo. The Committee noted that the University is renowned for providing an affordable and high quality education, and that this tradition should be upheld.

Meanwhile earlier, the Students’ Union, in collaboration with the Associations' Presidents and MSSN’s Ameer, held a meeting with the University Management. The University Management told the Students’ Union that Universities have been given autonomy and the Federal Government will not fund Federal Universities.

The School Fees Review Committee urges the University Management to stay in dialogue with the Union and to reconsider its ‘Stance’ on the proposed fees. The Committee also encouraged the University Management to listen to the Students’ Union’s opinions as the negotiations continue in order to maintain an affordable and quality education in Obafemi Awolowo University. The Students’ Union also urged students to put an halt to payment of school fees until an agreement is reached between the Union and the University Management.

When asked about the next steps to be taken by the Students’ Union and the SRC, the Chairperson of the School Fees Review Committee, Olugbade Majeed Lev, said that he and the members of the SRC have had Consultation and Consolidation and will not be engaging in any form of negotiation. Referring to the final paragraph of the SRC press release, which said that the SUC would take action against the University Management, he said ‘We’re trying to resolve things first.’

He also said the congress has full power to decide whether there will be a protest.
