Fee Increment: Students' Union Set To Meet With OAU Management Tomorrow

Adeniran Tolulope

The Great Ife Students' Union in its bid to ensure a significant reduction in the 2022/2023 academic session fees to be paid by students, both fresh and returning students called for a Congress to reach a consensus on demands to be tabled to the Management of the University in a meeting scheduled for Tuesday 19th September, 2023.

You'll recall that the Students' Union, last week, had several meetings as regards the sudden increment of the fees. Also, recall that a larger percentage of students are required to pay an amount not less than ₦100,000 for the coming session. Meanwhile, in its bid to ensure there is a moderate amount of the fees to be paid by the students, the Students' Union, under the leadership of Ojo Abass Akinremi pka Lordfem, engaged students' stakeholders in the University deliberate and agree on a fee range in order to reduce the possible hike in drop-outs. According to the Union, the options on ground are to either decrease the proposed school fees or to totally reverse the hike in fees.

Despite a series of meetings held with the Management regarding the matter, there has been no consensus because the delegates sent by the management tend to leave the negotiation table without a solid agreement with the Students' Union.

The Students' Union in the congress held at Aluta Square today have resolved into two resolutions that:

1. There should be a committee set up at the congress, whose duty is to accompany the Leadership of the Students' Union, SRC, HEC, Faculties, Association of Campus Journalists, and the Ameer of MSSN to the meeting scheduled with the University management tomorrow.

2. In the case of no total reversal in the school fees, there should be way forward which is to clamour for partial reduction, which will be either a 20%, 50% or 100% increase in the previous amount of school fees.

The committee which was set up at the congress include the following:
1. Oshodi Abdulsamad
2. Siyanbola Pelumi
3. Olugbade Majeed
4. Okunzie Chiagozie Kelvin
5. Omisore Michael

Furthermore, the committee is tasked to obtain suggestions from students on whether the Union should stand on its decision for a total reversal or request for a partial deduction and perhaps work on using the 50% or 100% increase in the amount of the school fees, if negotiation on using total reversal fails.
