Nigerians React to OAU's Plan about Building an Airport

Nigerians have reacted to news about Obafemi Awolowo University's plan of building an airpot. The reactions were vented on Twitter after The Punch Newspaper reported the news.

The Vice Chancellor when speaking in the faculty of technology international conference made it known that the school has long been planning on starting an aeronautic proramme and building an airpot. "We believe that the future of travel globally is in the air. It is in view of this that we are starting an aeronautic programme. As part of this, we will be having our own airport," the Vice Chancellor said as quoted by The Punch newspaper.

However, reactions that trailed the publication of the plan on Twitter, a social media networking service, showed that the plan was not well-received by Nigerians. While some think it is a good and progressive plan, most think it is a misplaced priority.

A Twitter user with the handle 'Lagos pikin' thinks it is a great plan. "OAU is planning a course on aeronautics which requires an airport to serve as a training ground. This is commendable and hope it leads to further possibilities and  the advancement of our aviation industry," the handle said.

Meanwhile, a Twitter user with the handle 'abisoladot' thinks the management could have done better with their decision making. "Good one but why not invest more in the repair/replacement of those facilities that are already in a deplorable state? Doing this wil give student great academic experience that will enable them to compete well with their counterparts from other universities. #misplacedpriorities," the handle tweeted.

Another Twitter user thinks the resources that will be used could have been channeled towards developing other already existing academic courses. 'We Like big projects in Nigeria. The available courses in the university, are they adequately funded?"

Eluyera Oladipupo, a recent graduate of the institution also thinks there are pressing issues in the institution that should be focused on. "As a recent graduate of OAU, I can confirm that this project is a reflection of gross misplacement of priorities. There are far more pressing projects of utmost importance to the academic purpose of the school that are shockingly absent or inadequate," he said.

Ogbeni Dipo, a popular Twitter user and an academia, also gave his opinion as regards the university plan. "I graduated from one of the best Universities in England. We have one of the best Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering Departments in the country but we don’t have an airport. I am not old enough to challenge a Nigerian VC o. But I am just saying we don’t need an airport sir."
