FEATURED: Despite Management's Intervention, long Queues Still Persist.

Peter Oyebanji

Despite the school's attempt to solve her transportation crisis, Obafemi Awolowo University students still struggle to get buses for conveyance from the school to their houses.

It should be recalled that the university's new accomodation policy that has displaced a larger percentage of the students to rented houses off campus and the transportation crisis is to the high number of students staying in town.

The University had put up some measures to solve this issue since the beginning of the new session but all have been futile. At the beginning of the session, the university security council told the commercial buses' drivers that if they can't get to the last bus stop, they would be stopped from plying the University's campus.

The measure seemed not to work out as students still kept fighting for buses which led to injury. The university's management then increased the number of commercial  buses which they previously reduced, this also didn't solve the problem as students still struggled to board buses.

"The management released buses that would help in conveying students to the school main gate, but it didn't do much as most students are living far from the gate and it will not be rational to pay twenty (20) Naira for the university's bus to school gate and then pay another fifty (50) Naira to town when they could have paid fifty (50) Naira from campus." a student complained.

Queueing is the recently adopted method, students going to the school gate formed their own queue separately from the queue of students going to town.

However, while speaking with journalists last two weeks, the university’s spokesman,   Abiodun Olanrewaju, said that crisis has nothing to do with the university and it is not the duty of the school to provide transportation for students as management has no affair with the movement of students.
