OVERCROWDING IN LECTURE THEATRES: A THREAT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

.

In an era where the premium placed on education is constantly being threatened, and the need to get a reputable degree is constantly being underscored, a new scourge has surfaced to weaken a resolve already deemed as feeble, as overcrowding in lecture theatres now pose a greater risk to knowledge acquisition than a  lackadaisical mindset once did.
Overcrowding occurs when the resources allocated for specific tasks are over stretched or used. Overcrowding in lecture theatres in the university mostly occur due to the inability of the school  management to control the amount of students taken in over the course of an academic session.
This  inadvertently leads to a strain on resources allocated for specific tasks as commonly seen in hostel allocations, lecture theaters etc.
This threat to conducive learning often reduces the efficacy of both students and lecturers alike. In overcrowded classrooms,Students sometimes have to stand near windows, sit on bare floors and even crouch in compromising positions. This hampers learning in so many ways as concentration is lost by students in overcrowded classes. The major cause of worry for them is to get a more convenient position to learn, hence the essence of learning is lost.       It is saddening that lecture theatres in Obafemi Awolowo University are continually being over  stretched as classes now pack more than half of the students originally designed for them. A peek into classrooms of this nature evokes a particular sense of barbarity as the expected aura of learning is being replaced by the sickening feeling of disgust. Students are packed like animals in a zoo as they breathe into each other's nostrils.
This has consequently  led to loss of interest of students in attending lectures as they abscond under the guise of inhumane learning conditions which can be rightly proven and backed. This in turn leads to poor grades as a student who has lost the notion of the essence Of attending classes has little or nothing to offer in the exam hall.
Only few students take the extra burden of trying to get explanations on what was missed in classes like that .
The  management in lieu of all that is going on has not resolved to reduce the number of students being admitted yearly seeing they cannot adequately cater for them any longer in terms of availability of lecture theatres.
In conclusion, the school management should attend to this primal problem  by building more lecture theatres and proper maintenance of the former ones. Responding to these needs will enhance academic excellence and a healthy environment.
