Opinion: As Nigeria Celebrates Her Children

Dasola Ayoola

Are we really right to celebrate our children? Are the children in the condition of being celebrated? Children are worthy and can be celebrated when the conditions around them call for it and are in the right state of being to. Their satisfactions as  children are when they get the basic necessities and qualities of living.

Yes it's good to celebrate children but presently as at where we are today, is the condition of Nigerian children worth celebrating? The country is still filled with challenges of children that can't even get the right to a quality and sound education. In a report published by Premium times on the 27th of May, according to their research,  "Nigeria has an estimated 13.2 million out-of-school children, the highest in the world."
Most of these children are on streets and iinbetween heavy traffic risking their lives hawking goods for parents during school hours for the family survival. Most children are the "push ups" of financial status of some families. Some of these families can't even feed without the proceeds from the Hawking not to talk of sponsoring a child's education?

This is the condition in which the country and the rulers are not even helping . At school hours, it's saddening that these children, out of no choice hawk goods in which the proceeds of such is not even up to what an average Nigerian will use to feed per day.

We crave for a better Nigeria, change of government but we don't really work towards the change. The government should help in educating children whose families can't afford education not embark on some other fruitless projects or concentrate resources on what is not. The children are our future but when they are uneducated, how is the future guaranteed and secured for us?

There is a greater need to invest in children because they are the hope of better tomorrow that we crave. We call them the future leaders but how do we contribute to help them secure a better future?
Education is a basic necessity for all, it transforms us into better individual,  education is life.
The government and even parents needs to enhance free basic education for all. Education is a responsibility for all and so we should all contribute to it.
Provision of basic free education is one but another thing is to provide the facilities that will enhance learning.

Although, government needs to be responsible but we also need to ensure and contribute to the availability of better educational services and programmes.
Some of the parent even have a carefree attitude towards education. Probably as a result of financial conditions. But we should endeavour to do our best to make the best out of our children.

Educate a child today, plant a seed for our future
