NASU OAU Reveals Stage of Discussion With Management

Non-academic staff union, Obafemi Awolowo University has revealed the stage of their discussion with the management of the institution. The Chairman, Mr. Wole Odewunmi in a conversation with OAU Kilonshele revealed it.
It should be recalled that OAU Kilonshele reported how the Non-academic staffs showed their grievances through protests that started on Monday, 6th of May. This outfit also reported how NASU planned on meeting with the management and how the University PRO downplayed the issue as a "family" one.
"It's an affair I would not want to discuss on the pages of the newspaper. It's a family issue, we'll sort it out," the PRO told OAU Kilonshele.
NASU started a protest that was aimed at calling the public's attention to the injustice of the school management and to also facilitate the full implementation of an agreement they had with the management in 2004.
Senior staff association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), OAU's chairman, Mr. Oketunde Ademola, in an interview with OAU Kilonshele noted that the action is meant to show the non-teaching staffs' displeasure toward the injustice of the school management towards staffs and students. He noted that the purpose of the civil disobedience is to reject the "illegal deduction of 7.5 percent of staffs' salaries" and to request for full implemention of the "earned allowance" agreement that was reached in 2004.
OAU's NASU chairman, Mr Wole Odewunmi, told this news outfit that despite the approval of the earned allowance by the school governing council, there has not been full implementation. He noted that only the parts of the agreement which relate to the University's big officers were being implemented - that the parts which deal with the generality of staffs, such as Hazard allowance, has never been implemented. He also noted that the issue had once been raised in 2015 which led to chaos in which the University's non-teching staffs' body was sued to court.
"The body has deemed it fit to re-raise the issue as it was realised that the University employed Over 140 staffs in December, 2018, unknown to the federal government, without following due process and despite the fact that salaries of new staffs can only be paid after two to three month succeeding employment. The new staffs' salaries payment have continued unabated since December which disproves the management's claim that there is no fund."
"There are lots of things they have been doing which we have been enduring. But following this struggle that has been started, we'll start inviting the press to raise other ones. Our argument is that there is enough fund to ensure the implementation of the agreement, they shouldn't say there is no fund," Mr. Odewunmi narrated.
However, in a recent conversation with Mr. Odewunmi, he revealed that some developments have been made and that the congress would meet on Monday to deliberate on the developments they have made with the management.
"We have already made some developments, we have gotten a memorandum of understanding (MOU) from the management at our last meeting yesterday (Friday). Most of our members had left before we finished the meeting with the management, so we will be reading the memo to the congress on Monday," he said.
The chairman also clarified their intention stating that they never planned going on strike. "We are not going on strike, we are just showing our grievances," Mr. Odeyemi said.
