Peter Oyebanji
The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University in a meeting with campus Journalists, spoke against misinformation. The management clarified that there are some people in the school that are not part of the Association of Campus Journalists (ACJ) but write a lot of wrong things against the school.
The meeting which was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students' Affairs, Deputy Vice Chancellor and some other top officials in the university was attended by editors of news agencies on campus and top students' Journalists. The management noted that they've been a lot of write-ups that are not depicting the current image of the institution.
"I've read information that isn't true. There are some things I read and I'd have to ask the officials involved if those things really happened or if they happened the way they were reported. I'd discover that nothing like such even happened. And from the information we have, we discovered that these people are not under the umbrella of ACJ." the Vice Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede stated.
The Dean, Division of Students' Affairs, Professor Isiaka Aransi, urged the Association to do better as regards the reportage of happenings in the school environment as Journalists will be responsible for their reports. "We should be cautious in our writing and report structuring so as not to be guilty of libel. We know the ACJ is doing fine. ACJ is legal and recognised by the school authority. We just need to do better," he said.
He emphasized that people who hide under unregistered bodies on campus to publish false claims against the management will be dealt with in coming days.
"We are not going to take it likely with this set of people," He threatened.
In his remarks, the President of the Journalism body in the school, Oludiran Olusola, maintained that members of the student group have not been found wanton on ethical standards of reporting.
He then promised that the organisation will continue to uphold the name of the school like it has been doing.
