OAU: EVICTION AND ARREST OF STUDENTS CONTINUE IN ANOTHER HOSTEL.

By Nurudeen Ajibade

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University has continued with the eviction of students from another hostel facility, Awolowo hall of residence, one of the crowded hostels.

The exercise has led to many awful occurrences as some students were arrested and beaten by the security unit of the university for allegedly harrasing the hall wardens.

The management, in a public release few weeks ago, informed students to vacate the halls of residence by 30th of March, 2018 for  renovation purpose.

However, some of the students on campus are writing their final year projects or undergoing programmes like Teaching Practice (TP) and Student's Work Experience Programme (SWEP).

 According to an eye-witness account, the security officers of the University bombarded Awolowo hall of residence and they chased out students with canes and charms.

Some of the victims of the eviction spoke with OAU KILONSHELE. The interviewed students refused to disclose their identity for the fear of being arrested by the school officers.

   "I am a final year student of Mechanical Engineering department. Management should know I have nothing to be doing on campus if not for my project work as I can't be risking my life travelling up and down for my project submission." One said

   "As management claimed they are doing this just for renovation, why don't they consider students who are not from anywhere around here? I'm a student undergoing my SIWEP programme." Another stated.

He further added;
" I have two friends two from my department who are foreign students as they both are from Ghana and Guinea respectively. Where do they expect students like them who don't even have any relatives around here to stay throughout their programme? This is nothing but callousness."

  It should be remembered that this news outfit reported the forceful eviction of female students from Moremi hall and the arrest of Five students.

The arrested students, who were later charged to court, have been granted bail last week after meeting the bail conditions.

As at the time of filing this report, the students arrested today have been freed after the intervention of some comrades. One of those arrested and beaten is a female student identified as Damilola Amethyst.

In a release circulated by Samuel Dunnex, the Secretary of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), the release of the students was confirmed.

"The arrested students have been released after intervention from a from a former C.S.O of the students' union (Comr. Sammie).
Amongst the interveners-Hon. Ayuba(A former SU parliamentarian) and Olamide. They were also battered and beaten blue black with sticks at the security unit. While the arrested lady(Damilola Amethyst) is presently in a critical health condition after severe assault, molestation with bruises on her body." He posted

Meanwhile, all efforts to reach the Chief Security Officer of the University, Babatunde Oyatokun, yielded no result as his phone number was not available as at the time of compiling this report.
