By Olufemi Alfred .O.

     The Action Committee set up under the Students' Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, has written a petition against the school over the suspension of the students' union activities few weeks ago, the attack launched against students on November 1 and the recent murder of a young man at the New Bukateria area of the University.

    The Committee has Oyebanjo Oluwaseun, the Assistant Secretary General of the union before its suspension and Gbenga Oloniran, the Secretary of the Alliance of Nigerian Students tudents against -Neo Liberal Attacks (ANSA) as its members.

    The petition dated 4th of December, 2017, blamed the University administrators for these bad happenings due to their incompetence and silence.

      "The killing that occurred on the night of November 30 is only the necessary result of the criminal silence of the university administration on the cultist insurgence that occurred on November 1 to which the university administration did not only ignore but also obviated in the media by saying it was a mere friendly fight." the letter stated.

"This obviously points to the university management as the number one promoter of cultism and neo-fascist violence on our campus, besides the suspension of Students’ union activities has further worsened the status of students’ security on campus. It is rather unfortunate that nearly four (4) days of the murder of Omogboriowo Femi, the university management has refused to make any official release on the gory occurrence, the Vice Chancellor has remained muted."

   After the need for the reinstatement of the students'union activities has been highlighted, the committee implored the University and Police force to take necessary steps for justice to be achieved.

"We the students of Obafemi Awolowo University hereby demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the union activities knowing fully well that this is the only nostrum to the terminal illness of the peace and safety on campus. We also call on the Nigerian police force and the university security team to, without hesitation; begin intense investigation into the issue and to bring the perpetrators of this evil to justice."

    It should be noted that OAU KILONSHELE  reported the attack of students by an alleged cult group, which left some students with injuries on the 1st of November and the death of one Dewumi Omoboriowo at the New Bukateria area of the University on the 30th of November, which the security unit is yet to come up with the identity of the killers.

    It was also reported that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the varsity, Mr Babatunde Oyatokun, explained that investigations are still ongoing and that people have been arrested while some have been released after interrogations.

    Furthermore, it was gathered by our correspondent that the school has not made a public release Sequel to the murder of Omoboriowo  up till the time of this publication.

     However, in the letter issued as regards the suspension of the students' union activities, the Public Relations Officer of the school, Olanrewaju Abiodun, stated that;

"Within a short period of its existence after its reinstatement, the Students' Union have, over time,  manifested misdemeanours that are unacceptable within the academic community."

 " Following security reports of incessant fighting and unruly behaviour during the congresses of the Students' Union and the recalcitrant attitude of their leadership,  it has become inevitable for the University Administration to suspend the activitues of the Students' Union." Dotun Awoyemi, wrote in the letter of suspension.
