OAU Security Department Says They Are Taking Steps to Stop Incessant Robberies That Started in December 2018

The Security Department of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, opened an official Twitter handle yesterday and a few hours into their journey on Twitter, students started asking questions they have not been opportuned to ask.

Among the series of question, a Twitter handler asked what they have been doing to stop the incessant robberies that started last year December and have led to lost of a student's life and properties. The department said they are taking steps - just that same steps have been taken by the Students' Union Action Committee earlier this session.

"The Dept has been in constant touch with all Residents & Vigilante associations," that was the response the department gave to a question about what they are doing to stop a trend of robberies that started in 2018.

The department also said they have received cases of false alarm from students and that students can do better. "We have hurdles which include False Alarms from students, on 2 occasions this month we moved in with @PolicNG officers only to find out it was a false Alarm. We can do Better"

However, this is not the first time the school management has responded to questions about what they are doing about cases of incessant robberies. When the school PRO, Abiodun Olanrewaju, was contacted earlier this session after a robbery in Oduduwa estate on how the school is trying to save students residing off-campus from the case of incessant robberies - he said, "is Oduduwa estate on campus? If it's not part of the campus, you can't expect the school security to be there."

The police, meanwhile, have always been assuring students that they are doing their best to stop the robberies. Although, they told the students' union action committee  in one occasion that the spread of students in town has made it difficult to stop the robberies and that the management has to find a way to halt the surge of students in town. The management has always said they don't have the resources to build hostels.

Nonetheless, Oduduwa estate and Aherifat were robbed on Monday night.
