Faculty of Education Emerges as Overall Winner of OAU Sports Festival 2019.

The Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University,  pulled an impressive performance as they were crowned overall winner of the OAU Sports Festival 2019 despite a disappointing loss to the Faculty of Arts at the final of the football event.

According to the medals table, Faculty of Education amassed a total of 23 medals -  comprising of 8 gold, 9 Silver and 6 bronze medals to emerge worthy champions. They were closely followed by the Faculty of Technology who also had 8 gold medals but were medal short,  having a total of 22 medals - comprised of 7 silver and 7 bronze medals. The faculty of Social Sciences also had 8 gold medals out of the 12 medals they obtained, with 1 silver and 3 bronze medals to come third on the log.

Faculty of Agriculture, Post Graduate College, Science, Arts, Law, Clinical and Administration made up the top 10 in that order with 19, 12, 16, 14, 13, 6, and 3 medals in total respectively.

Dentistry and pharmacy were the only faculties with no medals recorded in the festival.

Meanwhile, In the football event - supposed underdogs,  faculty of Art, stunned favourite, Faculty of Education, to clinch gold. Toba Muriana struck late in the second half, with just 6 seconds of the 2 minutes extratime left,  to cancel out Opeyemi’s opener from the penalty spot - forcing the game into penalties and sending fans at OAU Sports complex into wild jubilations.

Inspired by goalkeeper Akanfe, the boys from Education were beaten in the spot kicks as the artists converted all 3 penalties to deny the educators who lost out again after reaching the finals for a second consecutive time.

The OAU sports festival 2019 was marked by class and was by far the most glamorous in the history of the event. 13 faculties and the post graduate college participated in 16 sporting activities - out of which 8 of them were the scoring sports to decide the rankings on the medals table.

The two week long event, which ran from the 11th to the 23rd of October 2019 - saw major partnerships (from Merrybet, Ife Heritage Marathon and Cwa, amongst other sponsors) add a whole new dimension and colour to the event.
The climax of the event was a Dinner and award presentation at the IGI sports complex to reward athletes who have distinguished themselves in all the various sporting activities.
