OAU Students Gain Global Recognition for Research and Leadership
Two students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have recently been honored internationally for their outstanding achievements in research and leadership, highlighting their dedication to academic excellence and global collaboration.
Mr. Ayodeji Arobo, a second-year Dentistry student, was appointed Student Ambassador for the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH). In this role, he advocates for global health issues, leading initiatives that promote awareness of tropical medicine and the health challenges faced by underserved populations.
In addition, Mr. Arobo contributed to international research by working with a cardio-thoracic surgery team made up of experts from Germany, Brazil, and the United Kingdom. He co-authored three abstracts accepted for presentation at the 39th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS 2025) in Copenhagen, Denmark. Notably, he is the only African member of this group and served as first author on one abstract and second author on two others. These studies include systematic reviews and an advanced meta-analysis of reconstructed time-to-event data.
Mr. Arobo also secured the prestigious Wells Mountain Initiative (WMI) Scholarship for 2025. This competitive award was given to only 7% of over 1,400 global applicants. Mr. Arobo was among the 29 Nigerian students selected, recognized for resilience and a strong commitment to transforming their communities.
Joining him is Mr. Muhammed Ayodeji Ahmed, a third-year Pharmacy student and member of the Young Researcher Hub at OAU. He is the only Pharmacy student from Nigeria to receive the WMI Scholarship this year.
Both students have also been awarded the Great Ife Alumni Dallas Scholarship, which further honors their academic excellence, leadership, and professional development.
Mr. Arobo maintains memberships in several respected professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and others related to neurology, cardiology, and microbiology.
