On May 31, 2025, the Ace Hall at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, was filled with excitement as students and health professionals gathered for the Health Storytellers Summit. The event, themed “The Content Cure: Storytelling as a Tool for Elevating Health Awareness for a Healthier Tomorrow,” brought together medical and non-medical participants to learn how storytelling can improve health education.
The summit featured a strong lineup of panelists, including Dr. Racheal Babayomi (The Jovial Dentist), Dr. Abraham Akinbami (The African Dentist), Dr. Isaac Adeyemi, and Dr. Ifeoluwa Adetula. The keynote speaker was Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, a medical doctor and health storyteller with 2.4 million followers on X (formerly Twitter).
Aproko Doctor captivated the audience with his relatable and inspiring talk. He explained how he uses storytelling to make complex health topics easy to understand, especially in Nigeria where myths and misinformation often spread faster than facts. “Stories win over facts. Tell stories, especially in Nigeria where myths spread faster than facts,” Aproko Doctor said.
He also shared his personal journey. “People don’t remember statistics, they remember stories. My first love wasn’t medicine, I wanted to be a space traveller because of the books I read. Sapa hooked me in university and I became a graphics designer without any skill, but I learnt on the job. That’s how I started telling stories in healthcare,” Aproko Doctor said.
The panelists discussed how to craft compelling health stories and use social media to reach wider audiences. The event was organized by students from the Department of Dentistry, OAU, and the office of the Public Relations Officer, Great Ife Student Union.
Attendees left the summit inspired and ready to use storytelling to make a difference in health awareness. “I came all the way to see Aproko Doctor and it was a great event,” Mojola Folowosele, a nursing student from OAUTH, said.
“It was a great event, a collaboration with the Faculty of Dentistry. So happy to see you all here,” Aka Daniel, the PRO of the G.I.S.U, said.
“If we are going to have a healthier Nigeria, a healthier Africa, we must know how to tell better health stories,” Aproko Doctor posted on X.
