Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, held its 2025 Library Week from April 22 to 24. The event focused on the theme “Read, Reflect, React: The Transformative Power of Reading in Personal and National Development.” It included exhibitions, readings, and a public lecture to encourage reading and creativity.

On April 23, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, gave the main lecture at the African Centre of Excellence Main Hall. His talk, titled “The Reader’s Journey: Navigating National Development through the Lens of Literacy,” explained how reading helps people become informed and supports the country’s progress. He said, “We can’t build a progressive nation without a literate population,” and encouraged students and teachers to read beyond their school work.

The event was hosted by the University Librarian, Dr. (Mrs.) O.A. Fadehan. Many university leaders and library staff from other schools attended. In her welcome speech, Professor M.O. Babalola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), spoke about the university’s goal to support learning with good library resources. Professor G.O. Alegbeleye, the event chairman, said it is important to keep supporting reading and libraries.

After the lecture, awards were given to people and groups who have helped promote reading and libraries. One award, the Friends of the Library Excellence Award, was given to Her Royal Majesty, Olori Ambassador Dr. Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, for her support of library work and reading.

Other activities during the week included a library exhibition from April 22 to 24. Visitors saw rare books, old documents, and new ways to manage information. On April 24, the Night of Readings event brought students and staff together to share poems, stories, and other writings.
