July 10: OAU Honours Five Students Killed in Cult Attack

Olabode Oluwafemi

Every July 10 since 1999 remains significant and adored in Obafemi Awolowo University students' community and its entirety.

Early hours of July 10, 1999 the institution's community witnessed a ghastly cult attack in one of its renowned student hostels 'Awolowo Hall of Residence' rendering 5 students short-lived through gunshots including the serving Secretary-General of the Students' Union, George Akinyemi Iwilade "Afrika".

The 24th commemoration just like other years since the melancholic incident took another style in remembrance of the occurrence which according to them birthed a cult-free living atmosphere in the University's Community.

The activities commenced on Saturday, July 8 with a movie night entitled 'Sarafina' with a cultism rally and bonfire held the following day and a grand finale featuring a symposium with the Students' Union's past leaders and activists on Monday, July 10 at the University's Afrika Amphitheater.

In the words of the guest speakers who stressed the essentiality of unionism among students serving as an "antidote" to cultism, further charged the students' Union leaders to resist godfatherism and fight cultism while also expressing their discontent and emphasizing the danger of the signed student loan bill.

ASUU OAU Chairperson, Prof. Anthony Odiwe in his speech called for synergy between the students' union and academic staff union while assuring ASUU OAU's support.

According to him the signed students' loan bill "serves the interest of the oppressors" while stating the academic staff union's stance is glaring as they're equally against it.

Guest Speakers in attendance were; Ogunma Andrew (Former Speaker SRC), Oloniniran Gbenga (Former Chairman SU Action Committee), Sanyaolu Juwon, Kunle Ajayi, Dr. K. Ajila( Former SU Vice President) and others.

The activities ended with a candle night procession in the university community.
