Student reporter got harassed

The Great Ife Students' Union held its first-ever congress since its inauguration on Wednesday evening at the Afrika Amphitheater. The atmosphere was puffed with a series of heated arguments and turbulence by congressmen as it appeared not peaceful.

The commotion began when the students' union President, Olayiwola Folahan absconded from recognizing a congressman identified as Sumbade Jnr also an honorable member of the Great Ife SRC chanting "security alert".

The congress venue which was seen pervaded by security men identified as 'Man O War' was protested against by the students as they claimed it to be against the customs and traditions of the union.

It subsequently appears to be the allocation of a bar at the renovated Ken Saro Wiwa students' union building spurred to be the major contending issue between the executive council and students' representative council. While the executive claims it to be its "exclusive constitutional right", the SRC is also at logger's head in dispensing his legislative power of check over the allocation of the bar.

The resolutions of the congress signed and released by the Students' Union PRO Ogunperi Taofeek accused the SRC Speaker, Ajadi Toheeb of being used as a tool of "personal vendetta" on the allocation of bar tussle and should be immediately suspended before his investigation.

However, a few hours after the congress, the Students' Representative Council equally summoned a sitting which was held on Thursday.

At Awo Cafe, the venue of the sitting, OAU security men were spotted as they invaded in an attempt to impede the plenary session and whisk away the Speaker, Ajadi Toheeb, which his fellow honorable members hindered by chorusly agitating that the sitting must be held.

"The sitting must hold. He is still our speaker. He is not going anywhere" they chanted profusely.

While the sitting went ahead presided over by the acclaimed suspended SRC Speaker, some young men identified to be Big Sola, Udeh and others as gathered by our correspondent were later seen disrupting and antagonizing the procession of the sitting.

OAU KILONSHELE in a telephone interview with the Lord Chancellor of the Judicial Council Commission questioning the justification of the suspension of the SRC Speaker made aware that the aggrieved party if unjustly treated should approach the council for redress.

"If the Speaker feels that he has been unjustly suspended, he should approach the court, the court is the last hope of the common man. He can always approach the court and seek redress" Abiodun Adesanya said.

Moreso, in the course of doing press coverage of the activities on Thursday evening, a parliament member identified as Hon. Fawas from the Department of History, representing Faculty of Arts was seen harassing a student reporter, attempting to cease his mobile phone.
