OAU Senate Commends University Management's Decision, Condemns Students' Protest

OAU Senate held emergency meeting with respect to the official letter released at the early hours of Tuesday citing in its agendum "Situation On Campus".

As earlier known, OAU students on Nigeria's 61st Independence day celebration, wage to protest against the role of negligence played by the University health center which resulted to death of Adesina Aishat Omowumi, a student of the Department of Foreign Language, after being referred to Seventh-day Adventist Hospital. The demonstration which lasted for 10 consecutive hours held Ife-Ibadan and Ife-Ede Highway under blockage.

OAU Senate, on Tuesday evening, expressed its displeasure towards the protest carried out by students and further commended the school management for taking "proactive decision" by suspending students activities, stressing that "precious lives could have been lost if action had been delayed." Consequently, it was  also in support of the vacation of students from their respective halls of residence and the putting on hold of the swearing-in of the newly elected Students' Union officers. 

 In a special release signed by the registrar Mrs M. I. Omosule, it discloses:
"Senate expressed sadness over the untimely demise of Miss Omowumi Aishat Adesina and commiserate with the family on the loss. Senate thereafter observed a minute silence in her memory."
 
"Senate unequivocally, condemned the students' action in its entirety and frowns at the blocking of Ife-Ibadan and Ife-Ede Highways and other adjoining roads."

"The Senate commended the Vice Chancellor and the entire management on the prompt and proactive decision to taken by the management that ;
i. Students should vacate the campus and halls of residence. 
ii. The swearing-in of the newly elected Students' Union officers be put on hold."

"Senate mandated the University Management to set up an independent committee to look into the immediate and remote causes of the students' protest with a view to preventing any future occurrence. The committee is to submit the report within two weeks."
