A WELCOME ADDRESS TO THE FRESHMEN

A WELCOME ADDRESS TO THE FRESHMEN

It has been a burning desire to address the Freshest men that have just been admitted. I would have loved to keep this piece till a week before your resumption but who knows what will happen in the next few seconds, though I'm optimistic.

It has taken a great deal of hard work, patience and God factor to get you in to this great citadel of learning. I'm sure the excitement is still on. It will know no bound on the day of your resumption. It is goodly normal.

You'll get more of things that I'll be offering today in 'catch-them-young' programmes, be it at departmental level or fellowships.

My dear, you were the headboy, headgirl, a prefect or one of the best in your secondary school. You probably did excellently well in your waec and Jamb exams. Those achievements are gone and I'll advise you take them off your mind, because this is a fresh phase. Take the ride humbly and be meticulous in paddling the canoe. Don't be surprised if you as the best graduating student in your college end up 'pamming' 'C's in your MTH 101,CHM 101....... You should also know that the credit pass mentality of A1 to C6 does not apply to the university.

Also, I won't want to emphasize this because it's something you should know. But if you don't, it isn't a crime. Avoid comparison no matter how minimal it can be. One thing I've noticed is that, you feel powerful or inferior on the grounds of comparison. If reading for two hours daily is enough for you to get all what you've been taught in class, don't compare yourself with a friend that can read 9 hours non-stop. Our rate of assimilation differs you know.

Another crucial one is knowing what you want. There are fellowships, bars, clubs, sports and games.... on campus. If you are interested in drinking as a social life alongside your studies - Good!. If yours is building up spiritually alongside your academics - Fine!. But it will be pathetic if you don't know what you want because in no long time, the environment will dictate for you and the aftermath may not be desirable.

I want to presume you know what time management is. You will do the practicals on campus. It is needed to balance your life (academics and other ramifications ) in such a way that one won't be a hindrance to the other.

Lastly , to those who are interested in campus politics, your part One days is the time for you to 'shine'- the time to show your colleagues that you are responsible. Though stressful, you can assume the post of class representative. Believe me, it is a good start. Once more, I welcome you all to Oba Awon University.
