Politics in Bed Space Allocation: OAU

Politics in Bed Space Allocation : OAU

Obafemi Awolowo University over the years has been fogged with diverse alleged controversial stories. These stories range from OAU management undermining the Students' Union, rights of students getting infringed in various ways, students getting bullied by disgraceful grades, sudden increment of school fees, unjust rustication of students Activists leading to dilapidated academic calendar etc.

Just birthed from this womb of controversial stories is the "Politics in Bed Space Allocation".

Antecedently, bed space allocation has always been compulsory for both Fresh students and Final Year students while the left spaces will be balloted by students in other levels.

Surprisingly, before the sudden resignation of Dr Durosimi as Acting Dean of DSA, many fresh students and final year students could not get bed space for 2015/2016 session due to a flimsy excuse of excess number of fresh students admitted.

After our thorough investigation, Oau Kilonshele has come to realise how Professors' and staffs' children on campus neither in their first year nor final year secure bed spaces that are meant for the 100 level and final year students respectively. These set of students don't go for balloting because of their so-called "leg" (influence) leaving freshmen students just coming in from various states in the country stranded of where to put their heads as the alternative which is town is unsafe for students due to reports of attacks.

These freshmen now squat in hostels, sleep in some lecture theatres and in hostels' common rooms; after paying over N70,000 each. A compulsory bed space allocation was assured by antecedent events. These freshmen have lamented since day one by their incessant visit to the DSA to beg for space.

In OAU today, Professors and other staffs' children now secure Medical Floor rooms meant for final year medical students studying courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Rehab and Nursing to support them for their intense and rigorous work load. This undue securement of bed space gets done through the DSA office.

"This unjust act has to stop now and forever. The Dean has to work towards the eradication of Professors' children getting medical rooms meant for Medical students and using their influence to secure rooms meant for balloting " A medical student voices.

Assertively, as at the time these words are penned, there are quite a number of freshmen still without space even after the camouflage balloting exercise on Monday, 15th of August, 2016 which allegedly left most people picking "no".

This revealing article is not to defame but to charge the office of the Acting Dean,DSA occupied by Mrs Grace Akinola to look into this and effect rational change under the promising leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Elujoba.

The politics should end with the resignation of Mrs Durosimi.
