OAU Former Vice-Chancellor Dies at 91

Prof. Cyril Agodi Onwumechili, the 4th Vice-Chancellor University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) is dead.
In a release obtained by OAU KILONSHELE from the family of the deceased confirming the death of the former Vice-Chancellor stated;
"It is with great sadness that we the family of Prof C.A. Onwumechili announce the passing of father yesterday. Our dad, Prof Cyril Agodi Onwumechili was aged 91, Emeritus Professor of Nuclear Physics, former Vice Chancellor of University of Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University) and Enugu State University of Technology and former President of Nigerian Academy of Science.
Although we are pained, we give God the Glory for a well lived life and pray that God accepts his gentle soul."
Cyril Agodi Onwumechili was born in 1932. He is a Nigerian Professor of Physics and staff of the University of Ibadan. He was the first Nigerian Geophysicist and the second President of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
He was elected as President of the Academy in 1979 to succeed Professor Victor Adenuga Oyenuga, the first Emeritus Professor of the University of Ibadan and the first African Professor of Agricultural Science.
Cyril later joined the Department of Physics, University of Ibadan as an academic staff. He attained professorship in 1962 and was appointed Head of the Department. The professor later became the Dean of the Faculty of Science before proceeding to University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
He became the OAU Vice Chancellor in 1979 and served till 1982 and is the first Nigeria Nuclear Physicist.
