At the upcoming 48th convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), 7,368 students are set to graduate with diverse academic achievements. Out of this total, 215 students will receive first-class honors, while 2,197 will graduate with second-class upper division, 2,691 will earn second-class lower degrees, and 755 will complete their studies with third-class honors. The university will also award 708 Master's degrees, 176 PhD degrees, and 74 postgraduate diplomas.
Amid these academic celebrations, the university will confer an honorary doctorate on Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, a recognition that goes beyond her current political position. Vice Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire clarified during a press conference that the award is primarily for her long-standing humanitarian efforts that predate her role as First Lady.
Tinubu has been acknowledged for her significant contributions to society through two non-profit organizations: the Yeye Asiwaju Foundation, which focuses on women and children's empowerment, and the New Era Foundation, dedicated to youth development and community service. The university specifically noted her consistent support, including sponsoring five prizes in the Faculty of Education and making substantial donations to campus infrastructure.
"We did not confer this degree because of her recent N1 billion donation. She has consistently supported humanity, especially women and youth through her foundations." Bamire said.
The convocation festivities will kick off on Tuesday, 10th December, with a Christmas carol performance at the Oduduwa Hall Amphitheatre. The next day, the university will hold a ceremony to award diploma degrees for the Department of Local Government Studies.
In addition to the degree ceremonies, the convocation will feature two notable lectures. On Friday, 13th December, the university will host a convocation lecture titled "From Campus to Career: Navigating Life's Realities and Embracing Entrepreneurship in a Changing World." Later that day, Senator Kashim Shettima Mustapaha Gcon, the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, will also deliver a convocation lecture.
Alongside Tinubu, the university will also honor other distinguished individuals with honorary doctorates, including Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe, MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola, and Daere Afonya-Akono.
