The Association of Campus Journalists (ACJOAU) at Obafemi Awolowo University held its induction ceremony on December 7, 2024, at the Students' Union Building TV room, welcoming new members into the association.
In his opening remarks, the ACJOAU President, Oluwafemi Olabode, emphasized the vital role of campus journalism in promoting responsible storytelling and holding leadership accountable. "As we navigate the challenges of this field, we must remain committed to the principles of truth, integrity and objectivity" he said.
The event featured engaging activities, including keynote speeches from two experienced journalists. One of the guest speakers, Damilola Olufemi, a developmental journalist, enlightened inductees on balancing academics with journalism and emphasized the importance of reporting the truth despite challenges.
Similarly, Peace Oladipo, an investigative journalist, discussed strategies for speaking the truth without facing undue trouble and highlighted key ethics journalists must uphold.
The event featured multiple engaging activities designed to energize and educate the new members. A game session and a question-and-answer period allowed inductees to interact and learn from the guest speakers. A memorable moment came during a spoken word presentation, where one inductee proclaimed, "Let your pen be a medication for the Nation."
Three top performers from the campus journalist recruitment exam were recognized during the ceremony. Lambe Ifeoluwa Emmanuel emerged as the overall winner, while Orisatoye Aminat Omotola secured the first runner-up position. Both are members of the OAU Kilonshele News Agency, with a third performer from another campus news group also honored.
The ceremony concluded with an oath-taking session, where all inductees pledged to maintain ethical standards and contribute to the growth of journalism. This was followed by the presentation of certificates to all inductees and awards to outstanding individuals.
