First Lady Criticizes Numerous Okada Riders, Boosts OAU with N200M Endowment
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu challenged graduating students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to make Nigeria their top priority during the institution's 48th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday.
Speaking at the event where she received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Public Administration, Tinubu emphasized national unity and encouraged students to dream big. She announced a significant N200 million endowment to the university, demonstrating her commitment to education.
"Nigeria should be first on your agenda," Tinubu told the graduates. "We must be united and committed to nurturing our nation for current and future generations."
The endowment will be distributed across multiple initiatives, including N50 million for the Faculty of Education, N50 million for the best female graduating student in Biology Education, N50 million for the best female graduating student in Mathematics Education, and N50 million for the Obafemi Awolowo University Foundation, which focuses on empowering girls through education and leadership.
During the ceremony, Tinubu openly criticized the university's environment, expressing particular concern about the high number of commercial motorcyclists, known locally as Okada. She noted that such a sight was uncommon on the University of Lagos campus. "Today, as we were coming in, I noticed numerous Okada riders," she remarked. In response to this observation, she pledged N1 billion to beautify the campus landscape and urged other awardees to help address the Okada issue by donating shuttle buses.
The university honored five distinguished individuals with honorary doctorate degrees. Besides Tinubu's Doctor of Public Administration, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi received an Honorary Doctor of Business Management. Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in Energy Planning and Management. Olukotun Karl Toriola received an Honorary Doctor of Science in Engineering, and Daere Akobo was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in Business Management.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire emphasized that these awardees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to their respective fields of expertise.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Special Adviser on Economy Tope Fasua, called on Nigerians to cooperate with the administration and endure current economic challenges. "We are trying to fix, reconfigure, and correct past mistakes," he said.
