Unrest Deepens as Unpaid OAUTHC Staff Demand 14-Month Salaries Amid Tear Gas and Gunfire

The atmosphere at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) turned tumultuous today as unpaid staff persisted in their demand for the settlement of 14-month overdue salaries. However, the scene took a distressing turn as tear gas canisters and gunfire echoed throughout the hospital premises in an attempt to disperse the protesting employees.

In an unfortunate escalation of events, law enforcement officers deployed to manage the demonstration resorted to the use of tear gas, unleashing a cloud of noxious fumes within the hospital grounds. Shockingly, reports emerged of gunfire erupting amidst the chaos, further heightening tensions and instilling fear among the demonstrators.

Among those affected, Mr. Odusanya Olusegun Abayomi, voiced the collective frustration, asserting, "We were committed to our work, we dedicated our resources to the work so our 14-month salary should be paid."
This latest wave of unrest follows a recent report by OAU Kilonshele, which shed light on the termination of employment of individuals not less than 1500 by the OAUTHC management. Allegations of fraudulent activities linked to job racketeering between 2022 and 2023 have only served to deepen the resentment and distrust among the affected staff members, fueling their resolve to seek redress.

Since the commencement of the protest on Thursday, February 1st, demonstrators have taken to the streets wielding placards bearing compelling messages such as "Pay us our salary OAUTHC" and "Our demand is clear. Pay our 14 months' salary." These slogans serve as a poignant reminder of the dire circumstances faced by the unpaid staff and their unwavering determination to secure their rightful compensation.

Meanwhile in a Press statement released by the Association of Unpaid OAUTHC Workers, the Coordinator, speaking on behalf of the members alleged that the CMD of the Hospital Complex, Prof Okeniyi ordered men of the Nigeria Police Force to disperse the peaceful protest.
