Massive Layoffs at OAUTHC as 2,000 Alleged Fake Health Workers Expelled
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) has terminated the employment of over 2,000 individuals purportedly engaged in fraudulent activities related to job racketeering between 2022 and 2023.
The decision to sack these health workers is based on an alleged violation of Section 100401 of the Public Service Rules. The management revealed that despite obtaining a waiver from the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to employ 450 health workers, the recruitment process was tainted by rampant job racketeering.
A memo released with reference number OAUTHC/160/VOL.II/272 and signed by Acting Director of Administration, Mr O.O OMONIJE, outlined that a Fact-Finding Panel from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare conducted official investigations between September 11th and 15th, 2023. The probe exposed irregularities, including recruitment outside the approved waiver and numerous other anomalies.
The memo stated, "Almost 2,000 additional employment/job offers were granted above the approved number, and many job seekers, sponsors, influence peddlers, and allegedly, illegal transactions were involved in securing these positions." It further highlighted the challenge of distinguishing between legally and illegally employed individuals and the financial strain on the hospital due to the excess workforce.
In an effort to rectify the situation, the management announced plans to conduct a rigorous suitability test for employment, exclusively for the categories of staff cited in the June 2022 approved waiver. The memo urged those not mentioned to desist from presenting themselves as staff of OAUTHC.
The management's statement concluded with a plea to those implicated in job racketeering to voluntarily step down, allowing for the resolution of the situation with minimal impact on innocent individuals caught in the controversy.
