There is deep sorrow at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) following the death of Oladipo Kehinde, a first-year student studying Agricultural Economics. Kehinde, who had sickle cell disease, died on June 17th, 2024 at the young age of 19.
The Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economics Students (NAAES OAU) released a statement expressing great sadness over Kehinde's unfortunate passing. "This is an extremely painful death for his classmates, our whole department, the Faculty of Agriculture and the entire OAU community," the statement said.
Though his illness created huge challenges, Kehinde is remembered as a kind, calm and well-liked person in the department. "He was a very young, quiet and shy boy. His Part 1 SER lecturer considered him a favorite student," the NAAES noted, praising his positive traits.
Kehinde worked extremely hard to gain admission to OAU, overcoming many obstacles. His perseverance and courage despite his difficulties deeply impressed the university.
"We are grieving the loss of such a gentle soul," the statement continued. "We pray that God comforts his family and friends. May God give us strength to bear this huge loss and may his soul rest peacefully."
The Agricultural Economics Department and Faculty of Agriculture are mourning, having lost a young student far too soon to illness.
