OAU Students Injured as Roof Collapses During Storm

A torrential rainstorm accompanied by whirlwind struck the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) campus early Thursday morning, causing the roof of the Amphitheater in Oduduwa Hall to collapse on students attending a lecture.

The incident occurred during a SER001 class held in Amphitheater as severe weather slammed the area. The powerful storm winds tore off the ceiling cover, raining debris down on the students below.

At least four students were injured and rushed to the OAU Medical and Health Centre for treatment.

The university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, swiftly responded by joining other top officials at the health center to ensure the injured received adequate medical care.

In a statement, OAU Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju said two of the more seriously injured students were transferred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, where the Chief Medical Director personally supervised their treatment.

"The Vice-Chancellor has appealed for calm and urged students and staff to go about their academic and administrative activities without any form of untoward action," Olanrewaju stated. However, as a precaution, the Amphitheater has been sealed off until further notice while the damage is assessed.
