Media Professionals, Associations present as ACJOAU hosts ICJC 2024

The Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University has hosted its awaiting insightful Conference for campus Journalists, the International Campus Journalism Conference, which is themed "Media Innovations and Technologies: Transforming the Face of Journalism in the Digital Age" on Saturday 4th of May, 2024 at Ajose Lecture Theatre, OAU. 

The conference which served as an eye-opener for campus journalists, journalists, and other media practitioners, contained a Keynote Speaker, Guest Speaker, Breakthrough, and two Panel sessions, where campus Journalists learned from the speakers and panelists of each session. In each session, the participants of the Conference learned how technological advancement and innovations of technology have helped Journalism to develop in the digital age. 


Speaking on the theme of the 2024 International Campus Journalism Conference, the keynote speaker, Mr. Oluseun Onigbinde, the Global Director of Budgit harped on how media innovations and technologies have transformed Journalism in the digital age.

He stated some of the inventions of technology that have helped the media space elevate reporting activities. For example, The use of newspapers, magazines, theaters, and posters has been replaced by the use of the Internet, webcam, podcast, videocast, social media, and other means of modern communication. 

Mr. Oluseun Onigbinde referred to some people as unpaid competitors of the media. He stated that these are sets of individuals who do not wait for a piece of information to go through the traditional media process, and once the news reports are received by them, they break it on social media and blogs. 

"The media has evolved, that we can stream news on our phone." Mr Onigbinde said this while referring to the evolution of media with the help of Technological advancements. He continued by reiterating that the media is now in an Era where it doesn't need any person to break it, but it breaks itself.  Furthermore, he called the attention of the participants to important things Journalists have to note in their career. This includes the fact that Good writing Is very essential and that people still love reading well-written stories. 

 In conclusion, the Keynote speaker redefined the process of media change as the beginning and a significant one, emphasizing that there will be a period in the future in which Artificial Intelligence will overtake humans in the Journalism space, therefore Editors will no longer have to proofread a report before publishing. 

Meanwhile, in the first Panel session which was moderated by the newly elected President of the UCJUI, Tosanwunmi Elizabeth, the invited panelists, Titilope Fadare, an Assistant Podcast Editor at SciDev.net, and Blessing Oladunjoye, the publisher of BONews, shared the experiences and difficulties they had in their journey in Journalism. 

Speaking on the theme of the first Panel session, 'Building an Innovative Newsroom: Strategies and Best Practices for Encouraging and Implementing New Idea', the duo noted that an innovative newsroom is a room that is willing to embrace change and adapt to the changes that won't be against the ethics of Journalism, since media consumer won't wait for the newsroom to feed them stories. However, the innovation is to help their work faster, and not to replace human sensitivity. On the other hand, Miss Fadare Titilope spoke to encourage the participants to become mobile Journalists with the use of mobile phones and the Internet.

Present at the event was the Deputy Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Akinyode Abidemi Oyewusi, who also noted how the evolution of technology has helped, when it comes to disseminating news reports, emphasizing that no one has to wait for the newsroom to break a piece of information about current situation before the news get to the audience. 


The panelists of the second Panel session, David Afolayan, Co-founder and content chief of Technext, Ganiu Oloruntade, Reporter at TechCabal, and Bolu Abiodun, Senior Reporter at Techpoint Africa discussed the financial sustainability of media houses and concluded that quality Journalism is expensive. The second Panel session was moderated by the Erstwhile Chairman of the Guild Of Editors of the UCJ UNILORIN, Usman Olatunji. 

The conference also had in attendance the presence of students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Members of the Association of Campus Journalists OAU, campus journalists from other universities including UI, UNILAG, AAUA, UNIOSUN, Media Professionals from Legit.ng, Dataphyte, etc..
