OAU Kilonshele's Editor Bags Investigative Journalism Award in Abuja

Alfred Olufemi, the editor of OAU Kilonshele news agency won the Investigative journalism award category at the 2nd edition of the campus journalism awards organized by Youth Digest Magazine.

The event organized for the purpose of appreciating and inspiring campus journalists in different categories held on Saturday in Abuja.

The event witnessed awards to 15 campus journalists from various higher institutions in Nigeria and Ghana.

Alfred Olufemi who bagged two awards in the maiden edition as the Campus Journalist of the year and the best editor, scooped another one on Saturday as the Campus Investigative Journalist of the year.

Speaking to Premium Times after the event, Alfred said ”There are no conventional patterns. Just keep doing what you do. It will pay off someday, very soon. Only if you are persistent.”

The editor of Youth Digest Magazine, Gidabo Shuaib urged campus Journalists to keep practicing the profession ethically and shun discouraging attempts.

 "We now face a dearth in our ethics and the ripples of this is being felt all over the country. Information sharing is being challenged by the menace of hate speech, fake news, brown envelope syndrome as well as other issues." He told Premium Times.

Another guest, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Justice Danladi Umar called for specialised training and professionalism on social justice reporting by the media.

Danladi said: “I am delighted to have a glimpse from the writings and citations on some of the winners of Campus Journalism Awards as they proffer solutions that could address corruption, electoral violence, gender inequality among others.

 “I am of strong opinion that social justice reporting can be taught at the university and encouraged by the media to focus more on Legal and Civil Rights, Gender inequality and child abuse, Human trafficking and domestic violence, equity and fairness, transparency and accountability towards better-informed citizens and a prosperous nation.

 The President of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Mr. Mukhtar Sirajo, while commending the winners of the Campus Journalism Awards said that Journalism and Public Relations are like twin brothers who are constantly communicating and interacting with their audiences through appropriate channels.

 He said the two professions shared basic principles of Truth and Accuracy, Fairness and objectivity, Humanity and Accountability in public communication.

Miss Maryam Abdullahi of Department of European Languages Uthman Danfodio University emerged the overall winner as the Campus Journalist of the Year. She was also offered automatic employment by CISLAC and an all-expense-paid-trip paid to attend an International Conference in the United States of America.



Meanwhile, four OAU journalists; Uthman Samad, Akinremi Rebecca, Okerinmodun faith, were also shortlisted for the honours at the final stage, and Adejumo Kabir, who bagged the award for the Photo Journalism category.
