The first television in Nigerian tertiary institutions, Edu TV, was launched in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state on Thursday.

The idea of the TV, which will commence operations online, was birthed by Femi Falemu, a graduate of the school.

Dignitaries who graced the event include; the Chairman of the community radio and the representative of the vice chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Bayole Olohade; the Head of the Department of Estate Management in Federal University of Oye- Ekiti (FUOYE), Sunday Olajide, amongst others.

In his address, Mr. Olohade, who commended the initiative, said it is a bold intention because it's from the youth and also the first of its kind; though requires huge investment.

"But this is an intention to put things together for the betterment of education in Nigeria,"He furthered when wishing the organisers and the CEO the very best.

Also, a Senior lecturer from Urban and Regional Planning Department in OAU, O.A Ogunba, noted in his presentation that  since the vision is birthed, the focus to press forward should be paramount.

Professor Ogunba urged the team members of the launched Edutv Nigeria to go ahead with more agility and focus not minding the odds of finances.

"The idea is a good idea, so, don't let it be thrown away," he said.

While looking at the strategies to take the innovation to the apex, he advised the Edutv Nigeria Team to cover all the tertiary institutions in Osun state first and advertise further to other television stations around as well as to to other university in South west and in Nigeria as a whole.

In pointing out ways of getting financial support for the baby TV station, Prof. Ogunba advised  that fund could be sourced through the local governments and the state governments, since it is obvious that the federal level could be difficult for now.

'Talk to them to assist in the big vision." he urged.

Another senior lecturer from African institute for Science, Policy and Innovation, who is the patron of the launched TV, T.O Oyebisi, stated that the aim of the TV broadcast is to 'educate entertain and inform' students across tertiary institution in Nigeria

He also added that the vision for this education television is to provide a bridge between the University and organizations.

"This is because the TV  station will create a platform between the graduates and the undergraduates, and as well serve as a means of training and educating people who have interest in broadcasting."

However, the Head of the Department of Estate Management in Federal University of Ado- Ekiti, Sunday Olajide,  while addressing the audience on the importance of adding relevant extra curricular activities to academic pursuit, said that the labour market is crowded only the creative individuals stand the chance of being successful.

"A complete student is the one that can combine great vision like this with his/her academic pursuit. This is because, the world of hustle outside the university environment is only interested in those that actually come out with something relevant aside their respective academic certificates."

In  the closing remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the TV, Mr Olufemi, expressed his gratitude to the attendees of the TV launch and noted that it was a great success to him personally.

However, speaking with OAU KILONSHELE, some of the students lauded the Edu TV initiative, being the first of its kind in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

"I think the Edu TV will act as a wake up call for the Nigerian youths, who finds it difficult to study, and looking at the impotency of it as well when it comes to lucrative enterprise," Olatunji Samuel said

"It will also act as a watchdog for the government to take education serious in the country," he concluded.
