The Computer Conference tagged "Next World" held on Tuesday had the display of the first Voice Control Robot built by seven groups of undergraduates from the department of computer science Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
While speaking with OAU-Kilonshele correspondent on what spur the interest in the mini robot project, the team lead, Mr Olukoya Moses, and others members such as: Olayiwola Olayemi, Adetunji, Isreal, Tolulope, and Tomi, explained that the rapid technological development and the need to leverage on the technological advancement for future relevance actually spur the need for the voice robot invention.
"We built this voice robot in an attempt to cater for the need of physically challenged individuals on the wheel chairs and particularly people who are very busy and could just instruct their cars and it takes them to where they had instructed. So, we want our own world to leverage on the place of robot to easing off the stress of driving and transportation for those that are physically challenged" they said.
In explaining the features of the Voice control Robot, Mr Olayiwola Olayemi, a team member said that the voice control robot has the features of functioning effective with wheel chairs and vehicles with just voice instructions as displayed earlier.
"It has an android web and application web that makes it functions effectively well easily even with having just the application on the android phone. What we are trying to do is to have it build in transportable machines in such a way that people could just speak to their cars and wheel machines and it takes them to wherever they instructed it to" he said.
They further added that they are looking forward to having a huge supports from all angles to having this voice control robot built further to a more surfisticated way in cars and wheel chairs for physically challenged people to make them function effectively well in their respective daily activities.
A key note speaker, Mr Deji Balogun, while talking on what the future of technology holds and how the present generation can holds a position in it as seen in the displayed voice control robot, he said that every facets of life will be affected by technology very soon based on the current technological advancement and its needs at the moment.
He however advised students to take any technological attempt made while on campus seriously because they will serve as the bedrock to stand on after school as a software developer.
"The knowledge gathered on campus will be very relevant to the outside world. You literally can function anywhere in the world if you utilize them very well as a computer developer and and software expert."
And the head of the department, Dr. Emmanuel Olajubu, while in his remark added that "the education of today without ICT is tantamount to illiteracy "
